The Tigers, who have had their hitting clothes on recently, pounded out 18 hits in the marathon off three Algonquin pitchers. The Bengals got another complete game as Loren Freund went all the way, allowing only six hits and striking out six. Six Tiger players got 2 or more hits in the game. I^pinie Madden led the attack with a perfect 4 for 4 day, including two doubles. Wally Frett and Melvin Freund each contributed three hits and Bob Brennan, Lioyd Freurid, and Ron Smith had two hits apiece. Ritt led the Algonquin attack with two singles. The big innings for the Tigers were the first, fourth, and fifth as we scored 4 runs, 4 runs, and 5 TSTis respectively in those innings. After that big 4 run first, Algonquin seemed beat before they even came to bat, and they never were able to recover. It would have to be called one of the best team efforts by the Johnsburgers all year as hitting, pitching, defense, and mental alertness all contrib- Mf?d to a complete and thor- • oQgh victory. Our boys played errorless ball that was no match for these boys from Janesville. The fans of Janesville displayed real courtesy and sportsmanship to our boys and we commended them on this wonderful display. It was truly a real experience for our boys t(? see this wonderful exhibition of courtesy. We ward to thank all the fans from McHenry who attended and followed our team to Janesville. It showed Janesville that we have fans who back our team also. Joe Frett's hustling Tigers made up for their one loss in I the tournament by sweeping Ladd's 12-5 in the playoff for third place in the state semipro tourney. The Tigermen slashed out 16 hits as Ted Schaefer went all the way against four Ladd pitchers. Dick Hiller continued his hitting surge as he had 3 for 5, including two home runs. Melvin Freund and Wally Frett also had three hits each, while 1 Lloyd Freund and Tom Oef- I fling had two apiece. The Tigers had two big fourrun innings which accounted i for 8 of their runs. In the third, three hits, three walks, and an error were combined for four runs. Hiller's home, run was the key blow in the big sixth inning in which L. Freund, Oeffling, and Frett also contributed safeties. Ted Schaefer went the entire route, striking out nine and walking six. Considering he had finished up with three innings the previous night,.this was quite a feat. Thus, as it turned out. the Tigers had to settle for third place in the tourney. All in all, however, they played very fine ball throughout the tournament, except for that one loss to the eventual 1960 state champs from Dolton. They did accomplish the feat of knocking off the defending state champs from Elgin, the A.C.'s. The team as a whole had a very strong hitting attack which was led by Lloyd Freund and Dick Hiller. Unofficial figures show a total of 47 hits in four games which is a very respectable figure indeed. Besides the hitting, Eddie Mack and Ted Schaefer pitched very fine baseball. Mack pitched two complete games, including a 2-hitter in the opening game against ' Harvey.
