Thursday, August 4, 1960 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Page Five TIGERS WHIP DUNDEE 3-2 IN FAST BALL GAME ^Lloyd Freund and Tom Oeffling Are Distance Hitters The Johnsburg Tigers whipped the Dundee Evergreens i 3-2 in one of the fastest and i finest games of the season at j Johnsburg last Sunday in the first game of a double header! for both teams. The game it- j self took less, than 2 hours to j (Applete which is a rarity in i CttQnty League competition. The' victory made Johnsburg's | record, 9-4 and tied them with | Dundee for second place in the league. Dick Drafz pitched j an excellent ball game as he allowed only four hits and" two runs. His opponent, Plauck pitched fine ball himself as he allowed only five .hits and! struck out 10 batters. Johns-1 lM\°j scored all of 'their runs I in the third inning, Ron Madden led off with a ^ hit and scored ojj - Lloyd j Freund's double. Aft-or Lloyd j made it to t h i r d base on t h e1 throw-in, Dick Hiller was h>t i on the knee by a pitched ba'l. j It was then that Joe Frett'sj men worked one of their favorite plays, the double steal.: IJNler broke for second, and1 Freund scored when the catch-j er threw down to second. The Dundee men expected it to a J certain extent since they were j ready for it and the play was; close at home. Tommy Oeffling | blasted a long triple over tlve! right fielder's head to send ; Hiller home with the third and winning run of the game. Besides Drafz's tight pitch' s^, hitting stars for the game were Lloyd Freund and Tommy Oeffling of the Tigers. Freund had two hits, including a double, while Oeffling hit the ball hard every time and settled for a double and triple. Dave Reddesdorf accounted for both Dundee runs as he drove in the first ,With a hit and scored the second himself. '"P'l&l-ah e e bv Chris Nelsen Jean Weyland Outdoors July 28 was another of the Thursday series C boat races at P.Y.C. Jim McMahon and Clarence Peterson in Y 4 won the race by a good margin. Second was taken by ' Frank Davenport, Jr.. in Y 66, and third was taken by Gene I?ietle with Danny Arkema and Henry DeYoung crewing^ on Y 20. The Cub boats did not race on Thursday or Saturday because of a" regatta at Lake Delavan. July 30 the regular Saturday series race was held at two o'clock. The winner of this race was Councelor Norman Reese and his crew Hedy De- Young. Second was taken by Ron Schloemer and Ron Leganger. and third by Don Looze and John Masechel. Sunday morning at 11 the Sunday series race began. Jerry Schloemer was the winner with his brother Ron following in a close second. Norm Reese walked off with third. Later on in the afternoon an E boat race was held. The winner of this race was Jerry Schloemer and crew. In second was Sid Peterson, Sr., and crew, with Paul Armstrong and crew following in third. Despite a slight misunderstanding as to the whereabouts of bouy 5 the sailors all had a' pleasant race. Next week Pistakee is the host to the Wisconsin Yachting Association Regatta. The three day weekend will be filled with sailing and parties; lots of fun for all. With 60 to TO boats lacking for the best position at the start our sailors will really have to be on th^ir toes 1o win. We are all hoping for good winds and no rain. Summer must be with us. It's almost too hot to peck away at this typewriter. T'was a lovely day on the golf course; but we were lucky. If old "sol" had shown his face it would have been a scorcher. Those high temperatures must agree with Sully Consago (a 5 on No. 17); Rita,Sleeper (a -4 on 16); and Joan Buss broke 100. Winners in the daily event were: Class A -- Rosalie Barnickol -' 75. Joan Buss - 76. . Class B -- Carmen Antonsen - 77, Sully Consago - 70. Class C Elsie Olson - 81, Rose Muska - 81. Please check the bulletin board in the, locker room for your line-up and tee time on next Tuesday. To date we have 23 girls lined up for our visiting day at Inverness. Plans were made (when this went to press) to meet at the Club House Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. and thus pool our cars. See you there. Get your tickets; tell a friend. The 23rd's the "livin end." Don't let anyone say that YOU missed the HULLABALOOS! ! Us J»ck Walsh llltllllllllllllllilTlllilllllllililllillllllilililllilJIIll'I'llHIIIIIIII Fishing seems to be at low ebb, according to most of the fishermen we have talked to lately. They all agree, as usual for this time of year, that it is useless to iish^ anytime but early morning and at night. Some white bass are being caught in the river. Sand flies, minnows and poppers are the best baits to Use. If you use minnows, fish them near the surface because the white bass in this area are predominantly night feeders and will usually strike surface baits better than anything else. The catfish are still biting, although not as good as they were a month ago. Fish are a lot like people in the respect, that they seem to get just as lazy when the weather gets hot. Well, you can't really blame them. We have noticed that many of the boating enthusiasts in our area have become more safety-conscious this year. This is partially due to the new state laws, but we like to think that people are just becoming more courteous and sportsmanlike. If everyone pbeys the rules of boating, our waterways will be a safer and more enjoyable source of recreation for all.
