Roberts, referring to the pre-1900 era in the current issue of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical society, says "Chicago was either the worstgoverned city in the United States or the best." In his article "'The Municipal Voters' League and Chicago's Boodlers," Roberts teHs a story of the epic battles which took place in the 1890s between the "good guys" and the "bad guys." That was the heyday of Aldermen "Hinky Dink" Kenna and "Bathhouse John" Coughlin, when all but a few members of the city council could be bought and everything the council ' did had a price. A favorite practice of the "boodlers" was to grant a utility franchise to a fictitious company for a goodly fee and. in turn, this "company" would sell the franchise to a legitimate utility at a much higher price. The newspapers and various reform groups were; powerless against the boodlers until the Municipal Voters' League was formed. iniiHiiinHiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiniiiniiiiiiiniiiimniniin Ultra-Modern One Mile East of McHenry on Route 120 Show Starts at Dusk THURS - FRI - SAT AUGUST 11-12-13 In Color & CinemaScope "THE LOST WORLD" Also Color Cartoon and Short Subject , SUN th'ru THURS .AUCftlST .14 to 18 In Color "HERCULES UtfCHAINED" •with Steve Reeves Also Color Cartoon and Short Subject" Wednesday Is Ladies' Nite J111! 1111111111111111! t IIIH11! 11 * 111111111! f I) 11' 111 iTiTn^M^T! You're Never Too Old To Bowl At jthe request of several old time bowlers in the McHeiifry area, the McHenry Recreation is organizing a league for the seniors. This league will be a member of th U.S. Senior Bowling Association. The league will be divided into three classes. Class "A" age 70 years and over. Class "B" age 60 to 70 years, and Class "C" age 50 to 60 years. Mr. Charles Jahn, age 76, of Park Ridge. Illinois, is the national president, and Doc Hattstrom, age 64, is national secretary. The, purpose of this bowling league is to re-create and revitalize enthusiasm in men of these advanced ages. Doc Hayes, age 73, of Antioch, .Illinois, advises us that the oldest member in the association is 94 years, bowling averages vary from about 90 to 180 and you would be surprised how much good, both physically and mentally some retired men benefit from just this little added activity. Then too, Doc Hayes says that even though some of these fellows were "hot shots" and held high averages a few years back, they don't mind bowling with lower averages now because they're in a league with men that are in the same age bracket. If you are interested, or know of someone that should be interested, the league will bowl on Wednesday afternoons, at 4:00 P.M., starting on September '7tn. The men will bowl with a handicap of 80% of the difference between their average and 200. Why not call Joe Kuna at EVergreen 5-2520 and put your name on the list? You'll have a lot of fun bowling and meet a lot of new friends too.
