The oil was piped into offices, store buildings, etc., by means of a one-quarter inch pipe, which in some cases led into ordinary-stoves and in other cases warm air furnaces, wthere it dripped over surface brick aftter it had been manually kindled. • In this same year, August 11, David Burrell, good citizen Of Little Falls, Herkimer County, N. Y., took out a patent on a furnace for burning liquid and gaseous fuel. Mr. Bunnell's invention, rudimentary as it was, reflected a clear understanding of the principals of spray and atomization of oil, the basis of Oil Heat as we know it today.# OoincidentaUy -- in 1885 -- a gentleman named Butz, in Minneapolis, who had become tired of chasing up and down the cellar stairs to tend his furnace, developed a practical system of thermostats and damper flappers. To be sure, these controls were for many years applied primarily to coalburning equipment. Nevertheless, automatic controls, perfected in 1885, became a vital element of Automatic Oil Heat, which followed in later years. 1893 The Big Test The great Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893 gave great impetus to the use of liquid fuel in America. 54 boilers were fired witih fuel oil only. In fart the heating installation was considered so newsworthy, the 54 oil fired boilers were one of the outstanding •'Tjtfiir °HhwWII htNTT1 fn iH--I" own exhibition building. 1917 The Big Change World War I provided the special circumstances that led to the wide-spread growth and acceptance of Automatic Oil Heat as the standard of home comfort. The circumstance: severe rationing of coal. The answer: installation of oil burners to provide heat on "fuel-less days." The result: when the war ended and coal again became plentiful, enough people had learned the pleasures, satisfaction and economy of oil heat to provide the Oil Heat Industry with a springboard for the mighty growth which is still under way. 1960 The Big Celebration To focus attention on the dramatic change which Oil Heat has wrought in living lhabits, CHI Heat Institute of America has proclaimed 1960 as OIL HEATS DIAMOND JUBILEE ... 75 years of carefree comfort. 66 local and regional chapters of OHI will tie in with the event. The manufacturers of oil heating equipment and accessories will participate. FREUND OIL CO. Phone EV 5-0852 401 Front Street McHenry, I1L Carefree
