Eliminate Home Fire Hazards National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9 to 15, is a good time to start a year-round program of fire prevention for your home. According to O. L. Hogsett, Univefsity of Illinois extension safety specialist, this program will be most effective if you set up practices that you and all family members can regularly follow. Here are some suggestions: Keep attics, lofts, cellars and other storage areas clear of trash and accessible for fighting fires. Store oily and paint-covered rags in covered metal containers, and discard them when they have served their purpose. Make a regular check of the heating equipment, chimneys, flues and wiring systems of your house and nearby buildings. See that defects are repaired immediately before they can start fires. Remove grass, weeds and dry vegetation from around buildings and along fence rows. Within city limits, follow local regulations for burning trash. If you live in a rural area, burn trash regularly in small quantities in a safe place. If possible, use a metai receptacle specially designed as an incinerator.
