But home economics researchers at the University of Illinois report in the latest issue of Illinois Research that they found that a 41-year-old woman needed 1.394 calories, a 51-year-old woman needed 1,264 and a 61-year-old woman needed only 1,200 calories. On the basis of their activities, all three of these women were classified as sedentary. The National Research Council allowance mentioned above are for women who are neither sedentary nor engaged in hard physical labor. They might be homemakers, store clerks or factory workers. Although they might be more active than the women in the home economics study, their extra consumption would not be great enough to account for the great differences in figures. Beula McKay and Mrs. Julia O. Holmes, who directed the study, say that their research emphasizes the need for more studies on the calorie needs for women between 40 and 65 years. They are particularly concerned about these needs in connection with the problems created by overweight. • They point out that a person eating only one level teaspoon of sugar or one-half teaspoon of fat beyond Ids needs would gain 1.7 pounds in a year, or 17 pounds in a decade.
