FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from tike Flies of Nov. 18; 1920 McHenry's first observance of Armistice day has been written, into the annals of McHenry post No. 491, American Legion as a huge success. The cotillion dance wAs attended by more than 300 peoplfe. H. TjL McConnell was cotillion leather, music was furnished by Mr- Andrews orchestra a n d lunch was served in the club rooms: in the basement of the Stoffeft building.. Miss Eleanor Conway and the pupils of the Prairie school, south of town, held a very enjoyable basket soeial at the school hbuse Saturday evening, and as a result of their efforts about $40 was taken.in. Armistice day passed off quietly in McHenry last Thursday. Old Glory was flown from many of the business houses and private residences of the village, while taps were blown by J. E. Hauswirth. He was escorted by R. E. McGee and G. C. Howard, both of whom were enrolled in the U.S. army during the late war. It was a source of great satisfaction and pleasure that Rev. William Weber and members of St. John's parish, Johnsburg, saw the completion of a grotto erected in the cemetery there to the memory of the late Rev. H. M. Mehring who for many years served as pastor of that congregation. Leonard Frett, of Aurora, formedly of McHenry, playing fullback for the Aurora Kayeees against the fast St. Charles team, at St. Charles, Sunday won the game for his team by making the only touchdown of the game. In spite of driving all night, to parties pate, and shooting under very bad weather c o n d i t i o n a "Dutch" averaged over 90 points. This lands him with the last five in the state and assures him of a trip to t^he National matches. t Congratulations, "Dutch". That's Sleeping good old McHenry on the map. Uncle Ezra of Rosedale popular radio artist over station WMAQ, and Gabby Hartnett, Cub player, were among the notables who enjoyed hunting in this vicinity last week. About thirty young people were guests of Rev. and Mrs. R. W. Pinell at the M- E. parsonage, Sunday evenifig, when; an Epworth League was organized.
