THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, December h 19Gfe UNDER 21 A column lor teen-agers By Dan Halligan *'[' DEAR DAN: We're twin brothers and our father owns large farm on which we've lived all our lives. We have a small bank account and with the scholarships we earned playing high school football, it would send us through college without costing our fabler a cent. He wants us to stay hone instead and work the farm. We would split a quarter of the profits and he'd relax. What should we do about the old man? If we do what lie wants us to, we'll be stuck here for the rest of our lives, .a- G. W. H. and G. D. H. DEAR TWINS: You two have a good agrument and ift liaA your father. I certainly can't say "you do this" or "you iSit that." Your situation is something that will have to be talked out within your family because there's a lot to be ©onitjfcrecL Perhaps your county agricultural agent could be Inrited to sit in on this conference. Personally, I never went to col'ege and I love farms flio my answer might be a little prejudiced. DEAR DAN: I'm a 19-year-old secretary in a small town and lately have had the feeling that I need to be more cjf a part of the church. There is a new single minister here Who is young and attractive and because I'm not a member bf his church, how can I make him notice me? There are plenty of young men around here to date and' I do but I think knowing this minister would help me Income a better person. -- Wistful. DEAR WISTFUL: You'd better separate your feelings for religion from your personal feelings for this young minister. You attend church to pray and to benefit from the services and not to make a hit with the clergyman. If your particular religion is that lenient that you can attend another church, that would be a step in the "right direction toward becoming acquainted with the minister. Once you do start attending his church, you can fed free to Introduce yourself or have a friend introduce you. As far as wmirfng him "notice" you, that can be accomplished if you plunge into church activities and become a regular ball of fire. All young, unmarried ministers take warning -- this girl meaps business. DEAR DAN: I'm a 17-year-old senior boy and don't like the way you run down kids of 13, 14 and 15 for Agoing steady." "ftme changes everything, as you may know, and twenty years ago when our parents were' teen-agers they had a life completely different from ours. When they thought of going steady, they thought of a somewhat serious romance. Today, kids don't feel that way. They refer to "going steady", when actually they just have a "boy friend" or a "girl friend." Maybe they haven't even been out on a date but they naturally want to sound older so they say they're "going steady." .1 don't go steady myself but I have several times and a couple of those times even before I started dating. Now for a question: How can a boy keep from being considered as just , a "friend" by girls? That's what most girls think of nie. Fiiends are fine but I don't want to overdo it. -- Terry. DEAR TERRY: Times may have changed in twenty JpQ&ra but gtrls are still girls and boys are still boys whether f^aey're teen-agers hi' this generation or the next. I'm sorry to ttave to disagree with you but when I talk against girls of 14, and 15 "going steady," I mean Just that. T*or a guy who's gone "steady" as often as you say you have, you seem to be having date trouble and perhaps it's * question of sprucing up your personality. In reporting the annivarsaries we wished them a happy eighth anniversary and it should have read eighteenth. As Jean said "Especially since we have a 14 year old daughter." Guess our arithmetic was bad that day. Anyway, we're sorry. Doga Again Several calls have been made to your reporter concerning the dogs and their destructiveness. Please keep your dog at home and not allow it to roam at will. Shrubs, evergreens, trees and grass cost money, plus a lot of hard work to plant. Hedges have been broken, holes dug in yards, garbage cans knocked over and the garbage scattered. All this can be avoided if everyone will see that his own dog is at home where it should be. Won't you please cooperate with your neighbors? Thanksgiving Day Doln's Pat Spindler's Thanksgiving guests - were her son, Jim, hit wife, their two children and Kay and Burt Reese.
