Page Four 1 THE McHENHY PUUNDEALER Thursday, December 8. 1960'" ISM® SO I HEAR... With a deadline breathing hard down our neck, we must reflect on what's cookin' or what's been cooked siijce last we went to press. Another year went by and came another invitation from the Johnsburg Tigers to join them at Hettermann's for the annual turkey dinner. You know, they have an Irishman named Brennan on that team and darned if he didn't act as their M; C. at the dinner. . We missed several, former players who have now joined the Hall of Fame and turned the jobs over to younger men. Manager Joe Frett was presented with a gift in appreciation for his efforts. Joe's intentions of retiring from his managerial post hits the team with a bit of gloom. Mr. Baseball has been a pop- Sman in Johnsburg base- Jhistory. Nofcthwestern's football coach, Ara Parseghian, proved an able speaker at the annual football banquet at M.C.H.S. last Thursday night. He mixed enough humor with the serious side vto give his talk a fine blend. That basketball game with Barrington Saturday night will go down in histcfry. The lead changed hands three times in the last 24 seconds. When Tom Creighton and Bob Miller each collected three fouls in the early stages, Coach Fulton chose to yank them and keep them out until needed for the final spurt. It was while these boys were out that the Broncos began to feel their oats and took the ball game away from us. bver at Marian Central, a couple of McHenry boys looked lil^e real class in the week-end gajmes. John Corso and Ken Stilling looked, far ahead of 4^hfir jp^esjvho cently finished a lU-game football season and haven't had time to make the switch to the hard wood. A posse had just captured a horse thief and was preparing to string him up. One member of the crowd spoke up. "May I say a prayer for this man?" The deputy in charge protested vigorously. "Are you trying to sneak this varmint into heaven when he ain't even fit to live in Texas?" D&Hy Pinups The best ju'dge of distance is one who' Can make both ends meet. i ROUGH WEEKEND FOR WARRIORS AT HOME AND ABROAD Bob Beckenbaugh The Warriors clashed with t h e d e f e n d i n g B a r r i n g t o n champs here Saturday evening in a second for second, hard played game. The depressing outcome was almost too much for the involved spectators and coaches. Play had a slow start, but by the end of the half the Warriors led by a pleasing 7 points, 36 to 29. Into the, third quarter the Warriors lead was cut within minutes by a tremendous surge by Barrington; at the end of the quarter the Bronchos scored 15 points to our 8. The fourth, arid most exciting quarter, the lead alternated almost every time the ball changed hands. With 17 seconds left in the game Paul Morenz was fouled. Trailing by one point the Warriors needed a tieing basket. Paul made both free throws to give McHenry the lead. Quickly the Bronchos took the ball to midcourt and called time out. With 14 seconds left the spectators watched the Barrington team wait for a final shot. It was missed but Bruce Condill rebounded for Barrington and put it in. Immediately the Warriors called time out, but with only one second to go the play failed. Discouraging yes, but the Warriors did show tremendous improvement over the previous games. The ball handling sharpened and the freethrow percentage was good; McHenry hitting* 15 for 17 and Barrington 18 for 20. Morenz and Creighton totaled 19 and 20 points respectively, while Bob Miller and Bob Vaupel added eight. The field goal percentage was about 52 percent. The Sophs also lost. Next Friday the Warriors play Palatine there. With effort and a desire to win the team can prevail over Palatine. Friday night the Warriors spent a long evening with Zion, £^5ir strcyyr-Tjjffyisp^ sharp team play and aggressive rebounding limited the Warriors action. This was the first defeat after two wins for Cliff Fulton's Warriors. Zion-Benton (82) Subtle psychology is making a point of not putting your wish-bone where your backbone ought,to be. Some folks feel they-re being fleeced when the price of down goes Adam is the one man whom history records as being indispensable. Candid comment is the kind that finds you friends, or asks you to get lost. Anonymous CLEAN STREAMS MEETING At the December meeting of •fchfe- • McHenry County . Clean Streams, a vote of thanks was extended to both the zoning board and ,the county supervisors. The group realizes the problems confronting them and the advancement made in the county by these groups to provide healthier living conditions now and in the future.
