How can I make freshly- laundered slip covers fit more smoothly when replaced on furniture? A. Replace the covers wliile they are still slightly damp. They'll smooth out and fit better than if ironed. Only the ruffles and pleats need a bit of touching up. Put a towel between the cover and furniture when you're pressing the edges of a freshly-laundered slip cover. Q. How can I make the slicing of butter or margarine into neat squares much easier? A. Fold the paper in which the butter conies over the blade of a knife, and cut with this. It will make a smooth slier and the butter will not cling or stick to the knife. ©. How can I remove grease stains from suede coats, bags, hats, etc.? A. By sponging them with a cloth dipped in vinegar. When dry, restore the nap of the suede by brushing with a stiffbristled brush. O. How can I remove some stains from my mattress? A. Place the mattress in the sun, then cover the stained area with u thick paste of starrh and cold water. Immerse an entire spool of your thread in hot paraffin, and let remain about five minutes. This will wax all the thread on the spool, and, since the thread will not then knot, you can make a better job of your quilting. Q. The tips of my youngster's shoes are constantly becoming scuffed and unattractive looking. What can I do about this? A. Shine the shoes Well, then brush several layers of shellac over the tips. Not only will the shoes retain the gloss, but the shellac will protect the leather against careless kicks, scratches, and the like. Q. What's the secret in mixing good plaster for a patching job? A. Be sure to add the plaster to the water. Don't ask why. All I know is you'll have trouble getting a good mix if done the other way around. Highway Division To Hold Bid Letting The Illinois Division of Highways has announced it will hold a special bid letting in Springfield on Dec. 29 to receive bids on projects in Gov. William G. Stratton's 1960 road program valued at $3,000,000. One of the contracts to be let is for 3.37 miles of surface course from one-half mile southeast of Spring Grove, northeasterly. McHENRY SINGERS PARTICIPATE IN MESSIAH PROGRAM The Harvard Choral society will present the twenty-second annual performance of George Frederick Handel's "The Messiah" next Sunday evening, Dec. 18, at 8 p.m. at the Harvard Community high school. The chorus will be composed of 150 singers from Harvard, Alden, Capron, Marengo, McHenry, Rockford, Walworth, Delavan and Sharon. It will be directed this year, as it has been from the very first year, by Francis F. Fardig, director of choral music at the Harvard Community high school. Among McHenry singers taking part are Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kissling and son, Bert, Mrs. Helen Mathis and Miss Shirley Ross. Everyone is invited to attend. A free will offering will be taken.
