/' ftrortday, becemket II. i960 THE McHENHY PLAINDEALEH TW? Business Fanning ?lb YIELDS or WET COHN DEPRESS MARKETS f&ttle receiving high moistil »e corn made slower and rtiore ertpfehsivle gains than cattle. bating dry corn, a recent caftle feeding test at the Unijity of Illinois reveals. Poufr types of corn were fed: Wet shelled corn (32 per It moisture), (2) Dry (15 percent mois- 0 Wet ground ear per cent moisture), Dry ground ear corn cent' moisture). Results at 131 days showed best gains at least cost on dry ground ear corp; next best, dr^ shelled corn; third wad wet shelled corn, and poorest was ground ear corn. Dr. W. W. Albert, who reported this work, explained that reduced palatability probably caused the heifers receiving the wet corn to make slower and more expensive gains. is reduction could have due to: (1) excessive moisture at harvest, and (2) undesirable type fermentation that occurred during ensiling and feeding. He explained that the cattle fed the wet ear corn and wet shelled corn were fed out of a silo, removing it at a slow rate. He feels that the moisture co($ent and the rate of feeding play an important role in the corn's feeding value. The University of Minnesota recently made these comments which will be of interest to farmers: Cattle fed for longer periods usually have higher carcass grades than short-fed cattle on similar rations. 0ittle fed in drylot tend to grade higher than those fed the same length of time on pasture. For best carcass quality, the protein content of the entire ration should be between 9% per cent and 11 per cent. Full feeding grain usually results in higher carcass grades, juicier and perhaps even more tender cuts than linked 'gratn. especfetly wtTh yoilnger cattle. The addition of fat content of the feed is still a question. Studies do| not all give the sai|i£ results. A, period of slow growth, for example, when range cattle are wintered on a minimum of feed, usually won't lower carcass grade. Reed additives, at proper lewlfe, normally have little or no effect on carcass quailty. .See your local Illinois Feed Association dealer for answers to your feed problems. TAX FACTS Both personal and real property taxes are subject to protest by any taxpayer who has legitimate cause for complaint. Properly taxes may be illegal because of an invalid tax rale. In the absence of special Page Threa statutory provision, the taxpayer cannot recover illegal taxes which have been paid unless such payment was made under duress. If personal property taxes are illegal because of ah invalid tax rate, the taxpayer may elect to pay the entire amount under protest and accompany his payment with two copies of a written protest. Elm Street (Across from A&P on Rt. 120) We Deliver -- McHenry, I1L Then the taxpayer must sue in county court within one year from the date of payment to recover the illegal portion of the tax, or he waives his right, of recovery. The statute relating to protesting real property taxes is applicable not only to illegal tax rates, but also to illegal assessments. First, the taxpayer must pay the real property tax under protest and file a notice of protest. Next, he must appear in county court in the next proceeding brought by the collector for judgment and order of sale of delinquent real property. There, he must specifically object to the taxes paid under protest; otherwise, he waives his objections. In real property tax protests the taxpayer states in general terms in the notice of protest his basis for objecting. He files duplicate copies of this notice with the collector. The collector stamps both copies to show the date of payment, keeps one copy for his files, and returns the other copy to the objector. However, the written objections filed in the county court must be specific. Furthermore, they must be supported by the collector's receipt showing that the taxes, to which objection is made, have been paid under protest. To meet this requirement. the objector normally attaches to his written objections his tax receipt and his copy of the notice, of protest. The burden is upon the taxpayer to prove that payment was made under puotest or the court will not grant him any relief. Frequent grounds, for protest are: Appropriations or levies are .not properly itemized; amounts levied are in excess of requirements; levies for loss and cost of collection are excessive; rates extended are higher than maximum limits; levies were enacted at times other than prescribed by statute; valuation of taxpayer's property was excessive; and levy was extended without filing a proper certificate of levy.
