ASK, PTA HELP IN EFFORTS TO CURS SHOPLIFTING Parent and teacher organizations today were asked to use their "tremendous moral force" to help stores curb shoplifting by juveniles this Christmas season. This appeal was made in a letter sent to Mrs. Robert Nelson, president, Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers by tne Illinois Retail Merchants association. "Shoplifting by juveniles", Fred Goerlitz, vice-president of the association said in commenting on tne letter, "has r e a c h e d p r o p o r t i o n s w h i c h make it a serious social problem which stores can not solve without help. Today more than 35 per cent of those apprehended as shoplifters in Illinois stores are juveniles. This nunber will grow unless those responsible fopthqmoral instruction of youngster^ take a more serious view of theft and the effe,ct which arrest can have on the entire course of a juvenile's life. "Any family can be exposed to the probliem of juvenile shoplifting. Contrary tb what might be imagined, it is not the underprivileged children who constitute the largest percentage of juvenile shoplifters. Most juvenile shoplifters come f r o m f a m i l i e s w i t h b a c k grounds which offer no justification or explanation for theft. An established and respected place in the community does not guarantee a family immunity from the shock and humiliation of having one of its youngsters apprehended as a thief. "Much of juvenile shoplifting will be prevented if parerfts will provide better supervision and 'closer control ovej* shopping dbne by their Children. Parents should know exactly how much money a juvenile has for shopping and the purchases which are made with it. When a teen-ager, for example, goes shopping with $10 and returns with a number of purchases including two cashmere sweaters, an explanation to parents becomes imperative. " T h o r o u g h f a m i l i a r i t y of parents with a juvenile's associates and their ability to influence others is equally important. TJie influence of bad companions is an old story to stores in dealing with the problem of juvenile shoplifting. "Stores can not stand idly by and permit theft simply be- Pag« TJw cause the culprit is a juvenile. They must apprehend the juvenile and make the unpleasant choice of either calling the parents or having the juvenile arrested. "No store relishes either the task of calling parents to tell them that a son or daughter has been caught stealing or turning a juvenile over to the police but it has no alternative. In the final analysis it is the parents who can avoid the necessity for stores having to make such a choice. "Christmas has a deep religious significance for many of us. It is also a very special time of the year for young people which should not be marred by any thoughtless act of theirs^ so inconsistent with the reasons for the observance of Christmas". OBITUARY WALTER BECKENBAUGH A former resident of the McHenry area, Walter K. Beckenbaugh, 77, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Pasadena, Calif., where he had lived for the past fifteen years. Mr. Beckenbaugh is survived by ten children, one of whom is a son, Robert, of McHenry; twenty-s even grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Services will be held at the McNabb Funeral Home in Polo, 111., on Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. The Japanese version of Santa Claus is the ancient god Hoteiosho, who has eyes in back of his head to help him see how children behave. BOOKLET CLEARS MISCONCEPTION ON HEAHT FAILURE In an effort to clear up a popular misconception about "heart failure" the Illinois Heart association has released a hopeful message stating thai most patients with this condition respond well to proper medical care and can lead fairly active lives. A new leaflet, issued by the I l l i n o i s H e a r t a s s o c i a t i o n , points out that contrary to wide misunderstanding, congestive heart failure (cardiac insufficiency) does not mean that the heart stops beating. A "failing" heart continues, to work but with less strength than is needed for good health. "Medical science has found ways to strengthen the heart and to help patients control their heart failure," the leaflet, "Facts About Congestive Heart Failure," states. It is available to local people through their physician or from the regional office of the Heart association, 606 Dundee, Elgin. Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart's ability to circulate blood normally through the body has been weakened by some form of heart or blood vessel disease. Among possible causes are narrowing of the arteries that nourish the heart, a severe heart attack, excessively high blood pressure, rheumatic fever or heart defects present at birth. The leaflet offers this' reassuring information:! "Most mild or moderate cases and many severe ones respond well to treatment. Hospitalization is the exception rather than the rule." The new Heart association leaflet emphasizes that only a physician can recognize and treat heart failure. ' The sooner he is consulted, the sooner the condition can be relieved or controlled." the leaflet says. Ordinarily, heart failure does not come on suddenly but attention should be paid to warning signals when they first occur.
