RECORD BROKEN Northern Illinois Gas company's twenty-four hour sendout record was broken three straight days as below zero temperatures ushered in winter throughout the utility's 20- county service area in northern Illinois. The' twenty-four record of 630 million cubic feet established last Jan. 5 was exceeded on Wednesday, Dec. 21; when 740 million cubic feet of natural gas was used. The following day NI-Gas' customers used 820 million cubic feet, and in Friday's extreme cold the total reached a new record hi<*h of 875 million cubic feet. MILK PAYMENTS Dairy farmers who produce milk for the Order 41 market, conslisting of Chicago and adjoining areas, will receive superpool payments on base milk only in 1961. Superpool payments are premiums paid by milk dealers over and above the producer prices announced by the market administrator. We took in the opening games of the Grayslake bas ketball tournament and saw the McHenry Warriors breeze to a win over Lake Forest. We sat next to a coach from Chicago area and listened to his impressions of the teams from an impartial standpoint. Our coach friend thought the McHenry boys were well cpached, had some fine plays set up, but wondered how they could miss so many shots. Our score card did not show the year in school for the boys, but our friend thought the Lake Forest boys might be young and a year away from their top stride. The Fox Lake (Grant) team seemed to take the fancy of our friend of short acquaintance as they smothered a Marian High five that is definitely in the building stage. (He thought Marian should pound away at fundamentals.) Fox Lake has size and speed, but seemed to us like a team that has not hit its potential strength. UBERTWILLE FIVE BEATS OUR WARRIORS (1-52 Fulton Team Wins Tourney Game From Lake Forest 61-45 Our friend thought McHenry might give Fox Lake a hard run Wednesday night. We felt that McHenry could and would win and go on to the finals. The committee in charge of the K. of C. sponsored parish tournament has an idea we will see some real sharp basketball in the local gym oveir the weekend. The teams have good coaches and star players in the various divisions. The Monday games you will see listed on the schedule on this page are starting in the morning to give fans a chance to watch the bowl games. Good idea. __ . 7 Hope you will take in this tourney. It gives many boys and men a chance for good sport during the holiday season. We have a letter from the Wisconsin State College at Whitewater telling us that Bbtt Hauser and Harry Hettermann played excellent football for the school this year. Nice to hear that former MCHS athletes are doing so well in college. WRESTLING by Bill Anderson The McHenry Varsity Warriors ended 1960 suffering from two defeats. After winning their first five matches, the Warriors lost to Libertyville 21-23 on December 16 and to North Chicago 21-25 on December 20. Bob Wahl, undefeated on the sophomore squad, wrestled varsity at 180 lbs. winning both matches. Dan Kinnerk (103 lbs.) also won both matches. Freshman Tom HaucftM95 lbs.) and junior Wayne Fuchs (165 lbs) both won the first match and tied the second. Ken Lishamer (112 lbs) and co-captain Butch Espey (154 lbs.) were undefeated until the North Chicago meet. They have a 6-1 record. Bill Tychewicz (127 lbs.) and Dan Kinnerk (103 lbs) also have 6-1 records. Each season a trophy is given to the boy who has won the most points for the team. At this point Dan Kinnerk is leading with 25 points. Close behind are Ken Lishamer with 24 points, Bill Tychewicz with 20 points, and Butch Espey with 18 points. Bob Beckenbauph The Warrior cagers were shaken last Wednesday 61 to 52 at Libertyville. The tall Libertyville team outscored the Warriors for the first three quarters and maintained control of the boards throughout the game. The Libertyville Cats now have a share of second place in the North Suburban basketball race. The first quarter the lead changed hands several times within the opening minutes, but Douj* Reed of Libertyville hit 4 consecutive jump shots to put the Cats into a 18-10 lead. The free scoring second quarter showed good offense by both teams, but the Warriors scored only 19 to Libertyville *s 2() fadints,'to go into the intermission trailing 38 to 29. Preps Takes Hold The press that was not effective ^he .first half took hold the low-scoring third quarter, but even so the Cats capitalized on free-throws and led into the fourth quarter 50 to 39. The fourth quarter the Warriors almost caught the Cats and were within 4 points twice; but a few bad breaks for McHenry with 2% minutes left, gave the Libertyville Cats drive and the game ended Dick Weber of Libertyville paced the Cats with 16 points while Jamie Hill was close behind with 13. The high scorer of the game was Bob Vaupell of McHenry with 22 points. Bob also commanded the Warriors rebounds. Mike Reese and Tom Creighton each had 10 points while Paul Morenz, who has averaged better than 16 points per- game, was held to one. Tourney Victory Monday night the Warriors started off the Holiday Tournament with a 61-45 victory over Lake Forest. The Eighth Annual Parish Basketball Tournament sponsored by the McHenry Knights of Columbus council No. 1288 will be held January 1 and 2 at McHenry High School gymnasium. Last year's tourney was a smashing success due to the highly contested semifinal and championship games. St. Mary's of Woodstock will be the defending champion in the Grade School Division. They, beat Christ the King of Wonder Lake in a close game, which wasn't decided until final minutes, 34 to 25. St. John's of Johnsburg will be the defending champion in the Men's D i v i s i o n . They downed a stubborn St. Peter's team from Spring Grove in a double over-time battle 70-66 to snatch the championship.
