The Workmgman I have known In any time a hundred artisans, a hundred laborers, wiser and more happy than the rectors of the university, and whom I had much rather resembled. --M. DE MONTAIGNE (1533-92) At the same time that factory work exhausts the nervous system to the uttermost, it does away with the many-sided play of the muscles and confiscates every atom of freedom, both in bodily and intellectual activity. The lightening of labor, even, becomes a sort of torturfe, since the machine dees not free the laborer from work but deprives the work of all interest. --KARL MARX (1818-813) We rarely hear, it has been said, of the combinations of masters, though frequently of those of workmen. But whoever imagines, upon this account, that masters rarely combine, is as ignorant of the world as of the subject. --ADAM SMITH (1723-90) Following are members of Bethel, No. 98, International Order of Job'? They court hazard and go out to meet it, for they themselves bear off the rewards of victory, and thus their institutions contribute not a little to their courage. --HIPPOCRATES (5th Century B.C.) Greek physician The government of the many is in every respect weak and unable to do either any great good or any it evil, when compared with le others. And this, therefore, is the worst of all lawful governments and the best of the lawless ones. -PLATO (C. 428 B.C.-c. 348 B:C.) Greek philosopher Freedom is an excellent thing, since even the Athenians, who while they continued under the ride of tyrants were not a whit moife valiant than any of their neighbors, no Sooner shook off the yoke than they became decidedly the first of all. While undergoingoppression, they let themselves be beaten; since they worked for a master. But as soon as they got their freedom, each man was eager to do the best he could for himself. -HEBODOTUS (c. 484-425 B.C.)
