This was only one bushel below the all-time record established in 1958. This information was contained in the Illinois annual crop summary prepared by the Illinois. Cooperative Crop Reporting Service, jointly sponsored by the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Tff.S. Department of Agriculture. i • \ Joseph A. Ewing, agricultural statistician, pointed out that the soybean crop in 1960 wAs the second largest from an ^crecrge-vstandpoint. Top acreage for soybeans was in 1958 when 5,066,000 acres were under cultivation. The 1960 acreage was 4,973,000. Soybean harvest amounted to 129 million bushels, with an average per acre yield of 26.0 bushels. Highest average yield was 28.5 bushels in 1956. Wheat production was estimated at 46.2 million bushels, compared with 43.2 million bushels. The yield of 29.0 bushels per acre was c6nsiderably below the 37.5 bushels established in 1956. Yields were generally good, but rust and smut infestation caused some drops around the state. Oats yielded an average of 51 bushels per acre in 1960. The record yield was 56 bushels per acre in 1955. The 1.8 million acres of oats harvested in 1960 was the lowest since 1877" ) S Hay production attained a record high tons per acre.
