Sports Headlines Presented In Review For Year Of 1960 January Morrie Crouch started the new year with a nifty bowling series of 692. Marie Stoffel hit the maples for 231-616 which should put h«*r in the majors. Johnsburg's heavies won the Knights of Columbus tourney at the local high school. McHenry fans were still shaking their heads and wondering how the Warriors pulled the Crystal Lake basketball game out of-the fire. The Warriors won 53-50. Wally Webb bowled a perfect 300 game at the McHenry Recreation on Jan. 20. The Warriors were still tied with Barrington for first place in the conference after defeating Libertyville and Dundee. February The North Suburban basketball Conference was all tied up with McHenry, Barrington, Zion and Crystal Lake occupying first place. The Barrington Broncos dropped McHenry into second place in the conference after beating them 72 to 66. Our Warriors went down in defeat to the amazing Harvard Hornets when they won their twentieth game of the season. The score was 76-58. March The McHenry Warriors lost to Elgin in the regional tournament at Crystal Lake. The score was 78-67. George M. (Junior) Freund was sure it Was a dirty Sox trick when S.I.H. failed to notice his 600 bowling series. St. John's Heavies of Johnsburg won the senior division championship in the state C.O.F. basketball tournament. Joe Etten did some fancy bowling with a 682 series which featured a 266 game. St. Patrick's Day came and S.I.H. and his girl Friday observed day by "wearin' the green". April In bowling Julia Kralowetz mowed 'em down for a 220 game and 532 series. George Kinsala had a 625 series. At the Rotary sponsored athletic banquet held at the high school Dan Kinnerk, sophomore wrestler, was awarded a trophy for gaining the most points during the past season and John Steinbach, a senior, won the free throw trophy for the second consecutive year. In bowling circles many good scores were recorded. Andy McCarroll had 633, K. Ingersol, 649 with a 266 game; J. Marsella had 628. The women came up with some fancy scores too. H. promised to go to church on Easter Sunday to pray and not to be amused at the new bonnets* The McHenry American Legion announced that it will sponsor a junior legion team this season. Some fancy bowling scores appeared. Morris Crouch bowled a 683 series and his wife led the ladies at the Palace with 572. The Suttons, Tom and Shirley, had series of 610 and 536 respectively. May The McHenry Shamrocks moved into first place in county baseball league after their third straight victory against no losses Jn league play. They edged the Elgin Arrows 1-0 behind the great pitching el Ron Mauer. Jim Wickencamp was the hero who came up with a pinch single in the last of the ninth to bat in the winning run. June All the baseball teams in and around McHenry, and there are many, were hitting their stride in the different leagues. Johnsburg Tigers defeated the Shamrocks at the McHenry diamond. Future "greats" were being developed in Little League, Pony League, Blackhawk League and the Legion. Our South , Bend Correspondent underwent surgery in a Chicago hospital and all her friends were pulling for her complete recovery. July The McHenry Little League AH Stars won the District, Two, championship by coming from behind to edge a scrappy Island Lake team 4-3. Art Jackson's boys gained the finals by beating Fox Lake 11-9. The Johnsburg Tigers were defeated by Dolton's Cavallinis 14-5 in the semi final sfe&te tournament game at Elgin. The Tigers earned third place in the tournament by beating Ladd's 12-5. The Pony League team was defeated in the district tourney by Janesville by a score of 10-3. August So I Hear observed his twenty-fifth year as sports editor of the Plaindealer. A small, informal celebration was held as a surprise event in his office on Aug. 12. The Sha m r o c k s defeated Richmond 9 to 5 in a play-of^ for fourth place in the final standings. September Dundee defeated the Shamrocks 8-6 to earn the right to play Crystal Lake for the county league championship. S.I.H. was more than pleased to have a visit, with Peggy Whiting. Peggy played shortstop for the Speedettes, a Teal good softball team in McHenry.
