Birthday Books The Harrison school library has 3,248 books and we believe imo be the best, and certainly the newest, at the elementary school level, in the whole of McHenry county. • To further the student's participation in, and knowledge of the library, a special birthday book gift procedure was introduced last fall which had added a book a week, on an average, to the school library. (Jit works like this. Instead of " treating the class to dessert in honor of his birthday, the student may make his class and the school the gift of a book of his choosing for the library. The birthday child goes to the front office and selects his . book from a special assortment for every age level. Each book a costs $2 which is an average Q^the actual cost. The librari- • arT Mrs. GusWftfeh, through the procedure with the student for entering a book in/the library. ^, A name plate is pasted In the book which says that the book ig the gift of the student in honor of Ms birthday. Accompanied by Mrs. Gustavson the student and his book go back to his classroom, where t h e p r e s e n t a t i o n i s made known and the class sings "Happy Birthday". Rounding out the ceremony in the primary grades, the teacher "finds time" during the day to read the book to the class. In any case the donor is privileged to be first to sign the book out to read. Expanding the library's use, it has been open to the community's children for the past two summers. It is anticipated that this service will be further expanded this summer to include more days a week for, checking out books. Friday Night League .
