DEAR READERS: I don't approve of teen-agers smoking but thej' do, believe me. Why do they do it? They smoke for any number of reasons, one of which is that the average teen-ager wants to be "accepted" and in too many cases, like a banana, will go along with the rest of the bunch. Many teen-agers who smoke today do so without their parents' knowledge or approval. A recent survey in the United States and Canada brought in some eye-opening letters, portions of which are published today. DEAR DAN: I picked up the smoking habit at a party with the gang. I saw the others smoking and decided to try it. I buy my own cigarettes from lunch money I save. My parents don't know I smoke and wouldn't approve but I only smoke about three cigarettes a day. I'm 17 now and have been smoking for two years. -- No Name, Please. I sneak-smoked for 11 days last year wheh I was 15 but one day I looked at myself in the mirror, went into the bathroom where I got sick to my stomach and haven't smoked since. -- Smart Girl. I'm only 16 but I've been smoking for nearly four years. My parents want me to quit and I'm going 'to try because you can't play sports and smoke. You should see the kids of 10 and 11 who smoke in the movies here. -- No Name. I was smoking for nearly a year when my boy friend gave me a choice -- him or the cigarettes. I chose him -- Kansas Girl. I smoke because I like to and want to. My parents know I smoke and I buy my own cigarettes. I smoke a pack and a half a day and don't think it's anybody's business what teen-a^ers do. -- Smart Aleck. I started smoking when I was 12 because the other kids I ran around with all smoked. My mother told me all about smoking but said it was my choice. I'm 19 now and smoke two packs a day. I'm twice as nervous as I used to be but I believe smoking relaxes me and don't intend to stop. -- Myrna Joy, Kalispell, Mont. I'm 15 and have the smoking habit. I don't enjoy it and know it affects my health but I want to be like the group. My father boasts about the early age he started smoking but yet he disapproves of my smoking. Don't get the habit, you non-smokers. .-- Robert Osterheim, Crosby, Minn. DEAR DAN: I'd rather smoke than eat and I got started because I had to be a smoker to join a neighborhood gang. We're only 13 and 14 but think kids could do a lot worse than smoke. -- Big Man of N.J. My mother started me smoking when I was 14 because she always had cigarettes around the house. I've been smoking for nearly two years aind do all my smoking in the garage. I smoke eight cigarettes a day. -- Ellen of Georgia. My mother wouldn't approve of my smoking but Dad says what she doesn't know won't hurt her. I smoke when I'm around him but not at home. -- Gerald H. of Illinois. My girl friend wants me to stop smoking but I've been smoking since, I was 13 and can't quit. I've tried too. She thinks I've quit but I haven't and can't. -- Ashamed. DEAR DAN r Don't use my name because if my mother knew I smoked she would beat me to death. My friend and I started smoking in her house one day three year* ago when her parents were out. Neither of our parents know we smoke and if they ever found out, I'm afraid what would happen because we're only 15. -- Two Girls. I use my lunch money to buy cigarettes although sometimes I think I'm crazy. I smoke over a pack a day and I'm ashamed to admit it. DEAR DAN: I started smoking when I was 14, smoked for one. year and then quit -- just li^q that,. ,1, fep^ ^qttefj and know smoking makes a person look a little disgusting. That goes double for girls. -- Healthy. Spring Grove Girl Scouts Sell Cookies Mrs. Charles Freund The Girl Scouts will have their annual cookie sale March 9 to 18. The court ordered full restitution for the six in $100 per month p a y m e n t s . P r o b a t i o n s were given from two to four years in length. State's Attorney Richard Cross had moved nolle prosse on count one of a combined arson and malicious mischief charge for the six who took part in burning several buildings, resulting in over $40,000 damage in the Harvard community last Oct. 30.
