:|IPP -Pag# Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER -Thursday* Mayl 1, SO I HEAR ... Twas an early morning call J. .r and our friend of long stand- "c,,/ing, Joe Frett, on the other end of the line. Could we join him in going ^#, to the ball game on Thursday? ff'i' Could we! Lest some of you Cub fans get the idea we were going for a view of beautiful -,'V Wrigley field, let it be known * that Charlie Hiller, Giant sec- -cr- ond baseman, was the atirac- : tion. McHENRY TO HOST CONFERENCE TRACK AND FIELD MEET NEXT WEDNESDAY AT McCRACKEN FIELD When the car was filled, Dick Hiller, George Sullivan and Tubby Simonini completed the jolly group. All those fellows know a thing or two about baseball and we didn't talk about, much else. Joe and Tubby had arranged choice seats near the Giant dugout and the sun shone brightly on the happiest bunch of hot-dog eaters you ever saw. Johnsburg and M c H e n r y were well represented at the game and you know who they were there to watch. Charlie had a great day at bat and afield. He looked for all the world like a big league ball player. We wish him luck to go with his spirit and ability. Do you ever take your newspaper off the top of the pile at a newstand? Naw. We don't either! The other day we reached down just a little deeper and took the paper home real smug like. Lo and behold -- some joker had put the top one down below -- torn and dirty. As this is written, Herb r"""15core has pitched a great game for the White Sox and things look brighter. The looks those Cub fans have been giving us during a 7 game losing streak i have been enough to make us • buy a one way ticket to Ko- • komo. HIGH SCHOOL NINE LOSES CLOSE 5-4 GAME TO DUNDEE The Johnsburg Tigers again trolled along to a lop-sided victory in County League play, '"this time clobbering Harvard 17 to 5. Cracking out 21 hits of vari- *xjus distances, the Tigers scored jriuns in clusters to make the path easier for Jaskot and ^Schaefer, who shared the pitching. Next week is Woodstock -- Crystal Lake Guest Day. Sign up early we show all the signs of a bang-up crowd. Edna Mae Johnson sank a beautiful approach on No. 2 green today. She must have been the only gal on the course with her hands out of her pockets! The first round of our directors tournament came up with many very close matches. As the venders at a ball game shout out their merchandise, such as "You can't tell the ball players without a score card", one match proved that you are not sure if you have won or lost if you don't have a rule book in your bag. The match was all even at the end of 10 holes. Tom Evans vs. Pete Mayer, Evans' second shot on the eleventh hole was stuck in the bushes making his ball unplayable. Evans removed his ball and dropped it behind the bushes and made a fine recovery shot to the green. Pete's second shot was ten yards over the green. He chipped up within 6 fd&t of the pin. Pete then asked Tom, "how many do you lie?" After talking it over with the balance of their foursome, and also the foursome on the 13th green, it was agreed that an unplayable lie was a two stroke penalty. Therefore, Tom was 5 shots on the grOBn^gand madfcUlto putt for^ft^rsstfiete had a tough down hill putt lying 3. Pete was very eautious not to go past the hole for a possible three putt. He putted inches short of the hole and tapped in his ball for a five, winning the hole and again the match was tied. They played the balance of their match and were still all even. As they started back to the first hole for a sudden death play-off, Pete said "let's go into the Pro shop and make sure how many strokes for an unplayable lie". To our amazement, the rule had been changed in the 1961 rule book from two stroke penalty to a one stroke penalty. Tom won the match instead of having a 6 on the eleventh hole, he had a 5, halving the hole. The second-guessing then went on in our lounge. Would Pete have gone for the hole and made a four and then what would have happened in the sudden death play off? Who knows? 100 percent of the members in the lounge thought that 2 strokes were correct. The moral of the above is to get yourself a 1961 U.S.G. rule book. You might win a match knowing the new rules and then again you might lose by knowing the rules too well. Best Round of the week: Tom O'Connell -- 73. Shot of the week: As the players are not posting their scores hole by hole on the score sheets, your reporter has no way of checking for eagles, etc. In the future, post hole by hole. VARSITY GOLFERS tSsfe TO ELGIN AND BARRINGTON Last Tuesday the McHenry golf team travelled to Elgin only to lose 7-3. The match was called at the end of 12 holes because of darkness. At this point Gary Adams lost 58- 56, Bob Vaupell lost 63-62, Bob Beckenbaugh lost 59-58, JohnN Rourke won 63-55 and Ted Hornby lost 63-62. Gary Adams and Bob Vaupell played 16 holes and both were winning, but because of darkness, the score had to be referred back to the 12th hole.
