OBITUARY EMMA WILSON st rites were held at the George R. Justen and Son funeral home Friday , altomoon ViftrMrs. Emma Wilson, 77, who ' <}ied unexpectedly Wednesday morning, May 10, in her home near Volo. Rev. George W. Martin of the Community Methodist church officiated at last rites, with interment in Grant cemetery, Volo. faSThe deceased was born April 27, 1884, in Wauconda township and lived her entire lifetime in that area. She was a charter member of the Volo unit of the Lake County Home Bureau and served that group as president for two years. She was also chairman of the Volo Cemetery society for seven years and was leader of the Fahocha Girls 4-H club. She and her husband, Frank E. Wilson, celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary last Feb. 14. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Clifford E. of McHenry and Frank V. of Volo; a daughter, Beatrice Petersen, of McCullom Lake; also eleven grandchildren. A daughter, six brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. THREE-POINT WEED CONTROL PROGRAM OFFERED A three-point program for weed control is pointed out to Illinois farmers by the state Department of Agriculture. 1 -- Plan to kill all weeds now present and prevent them from producing seed. This includes crop land but also all non-cultivated land such as fencerows, gardens, pastures and roadsides. A four-foot strip of foncerow one-half mile long is only one-fourth acre but will produce millions of weed seeds if left unattended. 2 -- T h e w e e d i e s t l a n d should be planted in crops, such as corn, where weeds will be easier to control. Soybeans should be planted on the cleanest ground. Pre-emergence •chemicals should be used for annual grass problems. 3 -- Plan a good sanitation program to keep new weeds out. Plant only "certified" seed and buy clean feed for livestock to prevent spreading the weed seed in manure. "So much publicity has been given to the long life of weed seeds in the soil that many farmers believe they will always have weeds," Larlcin said, "but normal cultivation gives weeds several chances each year to germinate so that their normal life in the soil has often been exaggerated." For the past seven years the bank has conducted a United States map contest for fourth grade students in the McHenry area schools. The winners of the grand prize in this year's contest, among the 700 entries, were Patrick Long of St. Patrick's school, McHenry, and Cheryl Tomao of St. Peter's school, Spring Grove. COOKS CORNER by Marie Schaettgen Here is one recipe that knows no season. It may be the nucleus of a heavy winter meal or a light summertime lunch. Cabbage Rolls % lb. hamburger 8 large cabbage leaves % cup cooked rice 1 egg 1 tsp. salt M tsp. pepper 2 Tbsp. chopped onioln 2 Tbsp. fat % cup cooked tomatoes. May use canned stewed tomatoes. % cup chopped onion Cook cabbage leaves in salted water for 5 minutes. (Combine hamburger, rice, egg, salt, pepper, and the 2 tbsp. chopped onion. Blown lightly in hot fat". Place a spoonful of meat mixture in each leaf and roll up. Secure with toothpick. Place in skillet. Add tomatoes, H cup onion, bay leaf if desired, and simmer for fortyfive minutes covered. For a light meal, serve with rice; for a heavier meal with noodles or baked potato.
