©lursday, May 25, 1961 Little League Notes The McHenry Little League season opened with three double headers last; weekend. Play will be resumed this Friday evening with games being Pj^yed only on weekends and hmidays until school is dismissed. Minor League Mike O'Brien pitched the Eagles to an 18-4 win over the defending champion Owls. The Cardinals beat the Falcons 14- 6 and the Bluebirds edged the Orioles 10-9. Major League Mike Conway had three hits Kit Carstens two as the ,Bluebirds beat the Orioles 9-3. Dennis DePauw was the winning pitcher. Bob Schaefer" struck out 14 and allowed only 3 hits as the Cardinals bowed to the defending champion Falcons 10-1. Neal Gute collected the season's first homer to avoid a shut out. Denny Jackson's f^r hits paced the winners. <v«ick Jager's third hit gave the Owls an extra inning 10-9 win owr the Eagles as Jack Hester won in relief. The Eagles overcame a big Owl lead and finally sent the game into overtime when Jack Thennes' pinch double scored two runs. Substitution Rules Parents and fans are refolded that the main purpose or the Little League program is to allow as many boys as possible to participate. Each team has 15 players and to allow the manager a better chance to get all his players in the game, free substitution is permitted. For a better understanding for parents and fans the free substitution rule follows: player may re-enter once provided: a. He does not appear at bat sooner than he would have if he had not been replaced. b. Fifty one runs were scored with Bimbo's coming out on top 29 to 22. Larry Gibson had 5 hits and 6 RBl's, and Harry Goldbeck had 5 for 6 with each hitting a home run. Art Beck led Vycital's with 3 hits and the first homer of the year in the second inning. Last Sunday the North Suburban schools came to. the McHenry Country Club for the North Suburban conference match. Individual honors were taken by the Barrington and McHenry boys. Five medals were won, two by Barrington and three by McHenry. Barrington and McHenry showed well balanced s q u.a d s and walked away with the match. At the end of 9 holes Barrington was one stroke up on McHenry, and at the- end of 18, Barrington was six strokes up. The other six schbols were far behind and did not- place any player. Team scores were Barrington 317, McHenry 323, Libertyville 343, Palatine 346, Crystal Lake 349, Zion Benton 388, Dundee 392, and Woodstock. 406. Individual honors went to Larry Grelle one under par 70, and Bob Dow 78, both of Barrington. Third place was taken by Bob Vaupell with an 80. tied for fourth were Gary Adams, Bob Beckenbaugh and John Rourke with 81 s. These three boys are from McHenry. In the play-off match to decide medal winners, Gary Adan.s took fourth and Bob Beckenbaugh. fifth. CONFERENCE MATCH VOTERS' LEAGUE --Merrilee Liptrot-- The League of Women Voters of Illinois celebrated its fortieth anniversary at a,state convention held May 9, 10 and 11 in Chicago. Over 400 delegates from Leagues throughout the state met and adopted their program for the next two years. Delegates from the Woodstock- M c H e n r y League of Women Voters were Mrs. John Lescher and Mrs. William Krause, McHenry; Mrs. James Venerable, Huntley. A concentrated thrive for a constitutional convention for Illinois has\been selected by the state convention of the i LWV of Illinois as its program l for the coming two years. | The action continues the I work on the constitutional con- I vention item adopted by the I League at its 1959 convention j in Peoria. The League will i work to have submitted to Ilii- : nois voters a proposal to hold | a constitutional, convention to | revise and improve the Illinois Constitution. I At the local League of Wornj en Voters annual meeting and . luncheon held at Mrs. George : Alvary's home in McHenry on | April 14. the membership adopted as a local agenda item the compiling and publishing cf a "Know Your Town" book. The book, • when published, should be a valuable asset to old members as well as newcomers of our community. The League is open to all women in the area interested in good government. COUNTRY CLtTB ESTATE HOLDS ELECTION MEETING Members of Country Club Estates Community association met at the Sam Schmunk residence at 2 p.m. May 21 to hold their annual meeting. Among the many items of business discussed was that of safety and speed on the streets and also the desirability op securing a ' suitable entrance marker now that the large gas ball is being removed and will no longer serve as a prominent landmark. Upon completion of the regular business meeting, Fred Bond, president, turned the meeting over to the election commissioner for the purpose of electing three new board members to replace the expired terms of Lewis Blomgren, Dan Lennon and Sam Schmunk. After filling these three vacancies the following officers were elected from the board to serve during the coming fiscal year: President, Henry Leisten; vice-president, Paul Freund; s e c r e t a r y , Roman Bauer; treasurer, Edward Schultz; social director, Ruth Schmidt; road commissioner. James Wallace; election comm i s s i o n e r , Joe Me Andrews; board of directors, Fred Bond and Leonard Gehrke. BLOOD BANK The response to recruit members in the McHenry County Blood Bank has been excellent and on June 1, the Bank will begin distributing blood to the hospitals in the county. The headquarters for the McHenry County Blood Bank is at the hospital in Woodstock, 527 W. South street. Blood will be available to the three hospitals in McHenry county to any and all who need blood. Paetow and Mrs. Carolyn L. Taylor. The club was organized for seventh grade through high school youths. The club's function is to teach acting on the stage. Meetings have been held the past* seven weeks and have brought together t h i r t y-one members. Membership has been closed for the current instruction period. Officers are I^eslie Decker, president; Patty Hansen, vicepresident, and Bonnie Bruce, s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r . P u b l i c i t y co-chairmen are Laura Bixby and Judy O'Brien, assisted by Diane McMahon, Ricky Ruzicka, Walterine Rochowicz and Mike Lichty. Approved at the last meeting were by-laws drafted by Ricky Ruzicka, Louis Ruggero, Judy Malockleb, Christine Weissenberger and Donna Raske. In meetings, the students have been taught how to use the hands, feet, breath control and pantomime. Paetow said the group would start to put on plays late in summer before opening of school.
