Thursday, Jiin# &196lfl PUBLIC PULSE "To flie Editor: ' "Today, Memorial Day, I was ashamed as I stood at attention in our park the flag was flying, rifles cracked, and taps played. But, one could hardly realize that this ceremony marked a solemn occasion, for the dozens of children that ran nosily around through the crowd distracted your attention from the ritual. Where were their parents? Oh, you say, perhaps they were marching in the parade and therefore were unable to control them at this particular time. I'm sorry, this is not a satisfactory answer for me and for the many others who felt that this display at a solemn occasion was distasteful, disgusting and completely inexcusable. "We ask ourselves, how can communism take over a FREE county like ours? I'll give you the start of an answer. If parents don't even take the time to teach their children respect for our flag, and the importance of revering our hallowed ceremonies such as Memorial Day, communism will have easy pickings here. Most of the ones running about were over 8 years old. My 4-year-old son stood quietly by my side holding my hand. He had been carefully told just what to expect and how to behave. "It made me ashamed to see the boys running and shoving to pick up the shells that had been fired from the guns in this tribute to fallen soldiers -- men who had given their lives so these very children might live in a free land. "Am I 'waving the flag?" I most certainly am! If we, as parents, don't proudly wave this glorious flag for our chili-, dren, so theiro eyes fill with tears, as mine do, when it is carried proudly by; our country won't be -here for our grand-' children to enjoy and protect.
