Riverside Dr. Ph. 385-5838 McHenry, I1L The Drivers Seat Major automobile manufacturers are cooperating with safety experts In an attempt to encourage the use of seat belts for safety. Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Amer i c a n Motors and Studebaker-Packai- d have announced lhat seat bolt hardware will be standard equipment on 1962 models. This is a major breakthrough that safety experts have been trying to achieve for years. Still there is grave cloubt the motoring public will make full use of this safety equipment. Although it has been estimated that universal use of seat belts would save 5,000 to 20,000 lives'a year, the average driver seems to have an aversion to using the belts. A recent survey of drivers produced varied, sometimes curious, reasons for not using seat belts. Many reasons were based on "misinformation or personal misconcept ions. One driver refused to wear a seat belt because it made him feel uneasy. Like mere drivers, he knew accidents happen, but believed they always happened to the other fellow. By wearing a seat belt, ^ Tonight, sip your supper main dishl Satisfying Triplet abup, plus a hearty bread and crisp green salad, make for a supper combination that's hard to beat for easy preparation andAwarm ^appreciation. TRIPLET SOUP he felt he was admitting that an accident could happen to him, and this he was not willing to concede. Another driver rejected the idea of being strapped to his seat. He wanted to be free to dive out of the car if he saw an accident was unavoidable. H<- held this opinion in spite of the fact the risk of serious injury from jumping or being thrown from a moving car is five times greater than if he stayed inside the car. One driver said most fatal accidents occur at high speeds. Since he didn't drive at high speeds, he said he believed he didn't need seat belts. Actually, half of all fatal accidents occur at speeds of less than 40 m.p.h. Even at 20 m.p.h., the impact of a car with an immovable object subjects a driver to forces equivalent to a fall j from a second-story window. I Perhaps the most frequent objection tr/seat belts is that , they are a "bother," according 1 to what many drivers said, j These persons said they don't j want to take the two seconds ! it takes to buckle a seat belt I and the half second it takes to ! unbuckle it. This is significant because protein is the most costly item in our food. Yet, besides providing inexpensive protein, milk also supplies an estimated 75 percent of the calcium and 45 percent of the riboflavin in the S. diet for only 15 percent of the food bill. Broquist explains that many people fail lo realize that' these nutrients would cost much more if milk were not available. A person might have to eat about thirty servings or vegetables and fruits a day besides the usual egg, meat bread and butter to get the adult needs for calcium alone. When milk costs the consumer 25 cents a quart, it's a good, economical food buy. Broquist explains. Half of the protein, all of the calcium and nearly all of the riboflavin needed by an average adult every day can l»e obtained for that^one quarter.
