On this page are a number of them, including the old mill stream where Composer Tell Taylor is said to have composed his famous song, "Down By The Old Millstream." Three of the best known places of business on Main street following arrival of the railroad in 1854 were the Smith & Snyder building, which was in existence as early as 187;x and the Gilbert building, later known as the Schiessie building, wliich was a popular store featuring fruits, groceries and provisions ten years later. Another scene shows the north side of Main street about the same time. An early Green street setting shows the old mill, and next to it, Owen & Brothers store. These scenes and many more will be included in the • reminiscense enjoyed by many during the week July 9 through 16. This is the last of the four articles submitted by the Junior Chamber of Commerce on communism. We face an immense slave empire whose rulers utilize deceit and duplicity as techniques Of government and diplomacy, lender those rulers the slave empire of communism is enin absolute and total on the economic system ij^f the United States. It is Striving ceaselessly to capture iaur markets, destroy our trade, find, through infiltration and Subversion, tie up our industrial development at home. We face today an ideology lyhieh seeks to utilize science r-- to reduce science to the Ifevel of a tool -- and make of n yp instrument of communist World conquest. H We face today a movement j t f e v e r - e x p a n d i n g p o w e r a n d prength fanatically bent on Achieving the subjugation of the wcrld. The expanding strength of communism is to be found today in numbers, in t e r r i t o r y , i n e c o n o m i c r e sources, in political maneuvering, and in military mifeht. face a regenerated domestic branch of the International conspiracy, making plans to exploit recent court decisions and highly optimistic fpr the future. , We face the fact that communism means more than a physical organization. It means ^jore thanL an economic system Arid more than a cultural pattern. Communism is a total jihijfsophy which enslaves the tiyman being from the cradle tp the grave. ijWe face the fact that while il communists are materialists, not all materialists are opmmunists. Scores of individuals who have never been members of the communist orgftnization contribute to the spread of the philosophy of riiaterialism. In so doing they a f e £ a d d i n g g e n e r o u s l y t h e strength of the communist movement. Among these philosophic materialists are nume r o u s e d u c a t o r s , a u t h o r s a n d lecturers. These materialists deny the existence of God. They deny the existence of the soul, of immortality, and of values derived from unchanging moral principles. Reality, the materialists maintain, consists only of matter. These people, as stated, are not communists; yet they are preparing mental soil for the seed$ of communism. Their perrtfciotis doctrine of materialism, fed to young Americans as something new and modern, readies the minds of our youth to accept, the immoral, atheistic, system of thought we know as communism. It is a fact that the doctrines which the materialists hold to today are neither new nor modern. The basic philosophy of materialism predates modern communism by many centuries. It is broader and more diversified than communism, yet it places today's noncommunist mate r i a 1 i s t s on common ground with the "idea men" who brought forth the curse of communism that now plagues the world. The theoretical father of m o d e r n c o m m u n i s m i s t h e philosophic materialism of the ancients. And the children of this father -- both inside and outside the Communist Party -- are partisans and allies of each other in the campaign to debase man to the level of an animal. And what is the future to be? Will we sit at the feet of false prophets and supinely allow this devastating blight to spread and liquidate the free spirit of man? Will we stand by meekly as individual man is annihilated and transformed into a mechanized mass creature? Or will we rise against the destroyer by fearlessly bringing to young American? the challenge, the vision, and the substance of atheistic phiipspphy which holds sacred fne^ dignity of each human being? Since the leaves turn light energy from the sun into food material for the plant, it is desirable to retain as many leaves as possible on the plant when you cut the blooms, says Charles E. Ackerman, University of Illinois floriculture specialist. During the first season of b l o o m , c u t t h e f l o w e r s w i t h very short stems. After that you may cut longer stems, but never longer than necessary. Leave at least two five-leaflet leaves between the cut and the main stem. Hybrid tea roses usually have a three-leaflet leaf at the top of the stem and a spray of five-leaflet leaves below that. If the stem is weak, cut just above the second or third five-leaflet leaf from the base of the stem. If the stem is al)out as thick as a pencil, you can cut just below the top leaf on the stem. Remove all flowers from the plant when the petals fall. Cut the stem with a sharp knife or shears just above the topmost leaf. Remove withered flowers in a cluster so that the others will have more room to develop. After all flowers in a cluster have withered, cut off the entire stem just above the lop leaf.
