July 6 - 13, 1961) SPECIAL EDUCATION CORRECTS DEFECTIVE SPEECH What is special education? It is an educational plan designed to meet the needs of children whose differences cannot be met by the usual classroom procedures. The great shortage of properly prepared teachers, however, has prevented many school administrators from offering an adaquate program to every child. Significant differences of a mental, physical, or social nature, found in all school populations, call for individual educational planning. This planning includes teachers with special preparation, adjusted supplies and equipment, and functionally designed classrooms, all of which enables the student to receive a public school education. What is being done about the teacher shortage? In 1959 the Illinois General Assembly provided 250 four-year scholarships covering tuition and fees in the field of special education. These are available to high school graduates of good standing. In addition to the state scholarships, several others are available. What does this have to do with you? If you are either a high school graduate who is looking for an interesting career, or an experienced teacher who would like a change, write to-- MR. GEORGE T.
