Pag» Four THE McHENBY PLAIM3EALEH isirif SO I HEAR ... That broth of a lad, John McCarthy, who served as Mc- Henry's Chief of Police a few years ago, came out of Florida retirement the past week and dropped in for a visit. McHenry American Legion Baseball Team Of 1961 We covered a lot of ground during the brief visit, but will need more time to cover the course. Have been thinking of the time we took a vacation after a 14-year lapse and our friend McCarthy pulled a good one on us. He combined efforts with our office girls, Helen and Terry, to pile our desk full of papers, books and more papers while we were gone. After striving to clear our desk before leaving, we opened the door upon our return and saw that mess. Brother, we almost had a stroke! MeHemry By Frank Rourke , Closer examination showed Something funny was going on £nd it wasn't long before the vllian himself came in the •oor to welcome us home. He $as innocent, of course! ff 5 It was old home day. Next (J) come through our door was glartin Smith, chilled to the Bone after that St. Louis temperature. 2 Martin follows the St. Louis Cardinals closely and was unfiappy with Lolly Hemus as jpanager. He must have been gappy with Solly Hemus as that Hemus has been given the Sate. 2 Martin still gets the Plain- Sealer, but names are not fattiiliar to him except in the old Sme items. Of course, he didn't forget to rib us about our $Vhite Sox. Said he thought Bis brother, John, had left fcwn during that awful Sox 9ump. i They tell us that by the &me of the next issue the fclaindealer will be moved to jjts new location. Front row, left to right: DeCicco, R. Hiller, Rourke, Fletcher, J. Hiller, May, Morenz. Back row, left to right: Hachmeister (coach), Freund, Hester, Himpelman, Stacknik, Peterson, Smith, F. Peterson (coach), and Klapperich. HUM'S BIG BAT BOMBARDS SHAMROCKS 6-2 Johnsburg Plavs In State Tourney At Elgin Park Tonite LAfter our complaining about 't-Jttlrirg a place to sit down §r hardly having sta n di n g jjoom, they tell us a comfortable corner has been set aside for us in the new building. 5 After 25 years at the old Stand, it is going to seem like leaving home. We have seen a |pt of them come and go in «iat time and had a lot of fun with every group. A perfect day at bat for Dick Hiller helped the Johnsburg Tigers beat the Shamrocks by a healthy four run margin at Johnsburg last Sunday. Hiller had a home run in the third, plus two triples and a double, to supplement a fine pitching performance by Gene Jaskot, who went the distance, allowing only five hits. The Shamrocks scored early in the game with one run in the first inning on a triple by Gene Freund who scored on an error. The lead was quickly taken away in the Tiger half of the inning. The other Shamrock tally came in the fourth inning on two walks and a base hit by Swedo. The losing pitcher was Mauer. Last Friday the Braves downed the Giants 23 to 5 as Cable and Adams hit homers. Adams was the winning pitcher. On Sunday the Cards defeated the Giants 17 to 5 as Frost and Wilkinson each hit two home runs for the winners. Paul Nitz was the winning pitcher. In the second game on Sunday, Rick Justen pitched the Sox to a 10-6 win over the Braves. Gaiy Walsh slammed out a home run in this game for the Sox. STATE TOURNAMENT TIME The time has rolled around for the annual Illinois State Semi-Pro Baseball Tou mament. The Johnsburg Tigers are entered in the tournament and will meet the Harvey White Sox at Elgin's Wing Park on Thursday night at 6 o'clock. If they win on Thursday they will play the following week on Wednesday night. Only nine years ago this summer in 1952 the Tigers of that day could boast of being the best in the state. We know our Tigers of today can do the same and wish them all the luck in the world. Let's have some fans there for support. On July 4 the annual "I Beat The Past Club Champion o f 1 9 6 0 " t o u r n a m e n t w a s played. Ed Buss, Jr., past champ, was the man to beat. Ed, along with Earle Seepe, George Johnson and Vale Adams, who have all been club champions during the past several years, also played as a foursome. The match proved that, all of the men still can Shoot a very good game of golf. For example on the 14th hole all four men hit their tee shots on the green in one. Very few foursomes - pro or amatuer - have duplicated this feat. Ed Buss played his round one over par. He was playing the field scratch, the rest of the membership (playing against Ed for prizes) could use their full handicap. Ed played a good game and only the following were able to beat him: Dick Rosing, Tony Victor, Dick Weber, Vale Adams, Earle Seepe, George Johnson, Doc Sayler, Harold Michels, Bob Straus and Tom Evans. Ed and his family had a fine day as guests of the club. Be sure to read his letter of thanks which is on the bulletin board. The leaders of -the second round of the club championship played on July 9, and the handicap championship at the end of 36 holes are as follows: Club Championship -- First, Vale Adams; second, Art Jackson; third, Ed Buss. Handicap Championship -- First, Tom Evans; second, (tie), Vince Weyland, Jay Christy and George Yorkan. Low Net Winners -- 1 through 12: Tom Evans, 67; Ed Buss, 68; Dick Freund, 69; Art Jackson, 69; George Yorkan, 69. 13 and up: Vince Weyland, 68; Harold " Jensen, 70. Shots of the Week: Carl Schmidt -- eagle on our seventh hole. Driver and wedge into the cup. John Falcon -- hit a fine drive on the fifteenth hole. His second shot, a 6 iron, went out of bounds on the fifth hole (it's possible). Rounds of the Week: Vale Adams, 6&;,ij£d Buss, 72; Art Jackson, 72. Hole in One: Jack Smithson, who is still on cloud nine, hit a 7 iron into the cup on the eighteenth hole. Jack was using a first flight ball. Merchandise in the pro shop sure helps the expense of a hole in one. Overheard Here and There: Alice Marion says that Orv is playing more and more like she does every week. Jack Thies, after hitting 100 golf balls, wonders why his hands are sore. Bob Blaney and Rex Roseberry both shot their age last Sunday. John Falcon, Ed Bishoff and George Yorkan are still looking for Jerry Harpling. (Boys -- Jerry has had it!) Lou Consago -- It's not possible for all of us to sec you. However, your letter was very nice and all of us wish you a speedy recovery. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL On Wednesday night, July 5, the Union Legion team came to McHenry to play off a tie (both teams having lost only one game apiece). The winner of this game was to face a Mcnee team in Will County for the first step up the ladder to the State Tournament. Our boys whipped Union 10-0, playing heads-up ball all the Way. Bob Hiller hit a home-run. Paul Morenz pitched all the way. Saturday at 10 a.m. the players and some root era met at the Legion hall to begin their trek to Moriee, a distance of 96 miles. Many thanks to the Legion for furnishing a bus with the capable A1 Phannenstill at the wheel. In spite of a "never say dte" attitude our boys were at the losing end of a 13-6 score. Those Monee boys had a slug-fest including eight homie-runs. The McHenry boys had to stand by and watch those balls, fed by a strong wind, sail over unusually short home-run fences. Paul Morenz hit a home-run for us, but it just wasn't our day. DeCicco and Petersen shared the pitching. This was a 2 games out of 3 deal so Monee came here on Sunday. They didn't hit one home-run and for awhile we thought we had a chance but thty capitalized on our errors and won 5-2. Paul Morenz pitched. We thought our pitchers did a good job but those Monee lads could really hit. Our boys readily admitted it and wished them luck when they meet the team from DuPage County. Wednesday we travel to Union to continue our regular schedule. There was a very good crowd at the game Sunday-- let's keep it up. Our boys still have a lot of spirit and guarantee you some more good baseball. Our next home game is Sunday, July 16, against Crystal Lake. They were responsible for our only McHenry County defeat in the first round of play. Come and watch us get even. Manager: Art Jackson; Coach: Leon Schmitt. The schedule for upcoming games will appear in the next issue of the Plaindealer. Meanwhile the team is going through vigorous practices to give McHenry what we think is one of the finest teams ever to come out of this area. &dK' Jean Weyland Seems like I've been on a vacation from ye olde colyum -- with the intervening holiday. Tuesday, July 11: Back on schedule and here are the results cf today's rounds in the match play tournament. Championship flight: Overton over Moss; Buss over Funk (forfeit). Bette and Dee shot 98's in a close match. Dee's approach on No. 2 dropped in, for a birdie but Bette was in there punching until the 18th. Joan played along in the threesome; .but with her actual 96 'Who needs to scoutV First flight: Barbian over Conway and Freund over 'Dot' Miller (forfeit ). Second flight: Sayler over Schloskey. Congratulations to all (to Rita Sayler who's home free) and best of luck to all you gals out for that final round next week. R i n g e r t o u r n a r r i e n t c o n tinues and low net for the 11th saw Joan Buss, class A; "Stinker" Burns, class B; and Millie Jackson, class C, come in ahead. Event for the day was low gross on the par 5 holes with Joan Buss, class A; Jean Weyland and "Stinker" Burns, class B; and Millie Jackson, class C, coming in with the honors. Marion Donnelley's "bird" on No. 14 will be a nice ringer. Emily Smithson says things are pretty miserable at home. Seems that hole in one on No. 18 went to Jack's head. He choked up a No. 4 and the ball (a first flight) rolled right in to the cup. She could "choke up" Jack! The ladies invitational is well on its way. All men brave enough to sign up have been "spoken for". "Twill be a really big day. Rest up!
