Early School Opening At Wonder Lake Is Debated Harrison school starts classes Monday, Aug. 28, and Ihe term ends Friday, May 25, according to an order passed by the Harrison school board at its last meeting. This is 178 school days within the ninemonth period. Several parents had attended# the last three board sessions seeking to have classes start after Labor Day. Recognizing that public sentiment, based on a poll made in June, seemed to favor a later opening date, the board authorized formation of a committee to study the 1962-C3 calendar year. Its recommendations are i to be made no later than Feb- j P^liy, 1062, when teacher con- j tracts for the following year | usually are signed. Supt. M. F. Thomas stated i several reasons favoring I he I early schedule of classes. These i were countered by opposing reasons that favored the later date. Families Tolled Mrs. Clarence Stahl headed a^ommittee of five that polled FR families from a list of 185 names. She reported 7.'i percent were in favor of the nostholiday school start. The b-javd felt the need for further study and expressed itself that some inconvenience might be incurred if the date were changed too close to the scheduled t w e n t y - e i g h t h o p e n i n g . T h e committee to study the issue is t& be composed of two board nrcmbers, two teachers and Thomas. A motion to appoint two F.T.A. members to the committee died for lack of a second to carry it. The board, in other actjons at its Aug. 1 meeting, directed Thomas to appoint a committee to include teachers, lay public menbers and civil defense officials, to develop a l^ogram of handling students should an air raid occur during school hours. This is to be reported on at the next meeting Sept. 5. The board also awarded n bid to McHenry Coop, to furnish the school with 30.000 gallons of No. 3 fuel oil at a net cost of 11.9 cent per gallon, subject to a maximum 1 cent per gallon market change durim£ the year, and to Standard Oil at Wonder Lake for regular grade gasoline at a net cost of 29.9 cents per gallon for school bus fuel, towing services if needed to be furnished" without charge. New Accounting Method Thomas, in making his financial report to the board. noted that a new accounting method has been set up which i is new to school districts in ; ; this area. It ofters more satis- : | factory methods, and enables i ' complete financial summary : statements quarterly through- j | out the year. I ; For the past fiscal schorl i year, Thomas reported the dis- ; triet was $13,700 under its ' ; a c t u a I income of $176,809. • i Some $8,900 of the deficit was j : attributed to a higher rale of j yax non-payments, mostly personal property taxes, during j the last taxable year.
