Legal ELM DISEASE DISCUSSED BY FARM ADVISER Dutch Elm disease is causcd by a fungus, says Farm Adviser Ralph Burnett. After being introduced into the water conduct ine vessels of the sapwood of an elm by the feeding activities oi elm bark beetles, the fungus is able to 'ij'row and spread throughout the tree. Substances produced by the fungus (.stimulate the production of gums which plug the water conducting cells in the sapwood. This plugging greatly reduces the wat^r supply avail able to the leaves. Also, substances produced by the fungus poison the leaf tissues. Affected trees show characteristics wilt symptoms and later die. This disease is carried from diseased to healthy most commonly by the. European elm bark beetle. This beetle breeds in dying and 'dead elm trees. "flagging". The wilting leaves wither and fall prematurely. The 6 a f) w o o d of affected branches may be streaked with brown or be brown throughout. If a branch is cut across with a knife, this browning may be seen as a circle of dots or as a ring in the wood beneath the bark. Most trees live from one to three years after the first symptoms appear. Usually large trees do not die the same year in which foliage first appear, and it is unusual for a diseased tree to live longer than four years. No treatment is known that will cure a tree once infection has spread into the trunk. Many research agencies are continually searching, for chemicals which will prevent or cure the disease. Tests, to be valid, must be carried over a period of several years and must involve a large number of trees.
