Thursday, September 28, 1961 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER UNDER 21 A column for teen-agers By Dan Halligan DEAR DAN: My brother went into the Army three months ago and yesterday! received a letter from him saying he wanted me to write to a friend of his in the same outfit. He says this boy is very,, nice but hasn't any family and never receives any mail. -- I wouldn't mind writing once in a while but I'm afraid of what my boy friend might say. He's a jealous guy and he may get the wrong idea. Is it permissable for a girl to correspond with a soldier under the circumstances I've described ? -- Pam. ^ DEAR PAM: It certainly is but just so your brother's friend doesn't get the wrong idea, he should write the first letter. Tell your brother you'll be happy to exchange letters but that you want the soldier boy to write first. Your boy friend may have a point with his jealousy but as long as you two talk this over before the letters start arriving and he knows you'll just be writing as a friend, he shouldn't have too many objections about the project. I know what it's like not to receive mail when in Service -- not personally -- but I knew of many boys who very seldon) received mail. . DEAR DAN: I'm not like most of the boys at my Jehool. I'm a runt and I'm skinny and I'm no athlete. Still. I ve got feelings and likes and dislikes. Right now one of my likes is this junior girl. We only speak to each in the hall but I d really like to invite her. as my date to our harvest dance next month. The trouble is. I'm afraid. Should I just go up and ask her or what? -- Afraid. DEAR AFRAID: You'll never get the girl to the dance by wishful thinking so the only thing left to do is to ask her for the date. The days of the "football hero" being •Mr. Big" at high school are over. Sure, he's still recognized ut so are the "brains" and so are the just plain "nice guvs." £ou're one of the latter, I hope. DEAR DAN: How often should a girl say something tc her hoy friend about his manners before getting mad' Mv boy friend has no manners and I've told him over and over but I haven't gotten through to him. -- G.H. DEAR Ci. H. -- Keep telling him but don't get mad. Anger is a lack of manners and I'm sure you don't want to lose yours in trying to get your boy friend to show his. The children who are receiving this competent and kind help cannot express their gratitude directly for program and policy reasons. I hope the responsible adults of McHenry County will help the Woodstock Children's Home increase its much needed services." At the first report, just over $2,500 of the $15,000 goal has been raised. Reports are still : coming in from some of the Ki- ! wanians of Woodstock who have been helping in the follow- up of business and industry there. Response has .just started on the 15,000 letters | released to residents throughout the county. Return envelopes were enclosed for the con- ' venience of the donors. j The brochure in each letter explained that the home is not j underwritten nor endowed and depends on its many friends for nearly two-thirds of its op- ! erational budget. It also points : out that placement preference has been given McHenry coun- | ty children. Many hundred of 1 the over 3.000 children cared ( for during the home's seventyj five year history have corne : from this county. Last year well over 50 per cent of its intake came from this-immediate area. Checks should be made payable to the Woodstock Children's Home, Woodstock, 111.
