A daughter was born Oct. 10 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, to Mr. and Mrs. Edward of Wonder Lake. Mr. and Mrs. William Cowlin, Jr., of Crystal Lake are the parents of a son, bora Oct. 11 at Memorial hospital. Mrs. Cowlin is the former Geraldine Carey, daughter of Mr. ' and Mrs. Gerald Carey of McHenry. A girl was born Oct. 15 at Memorial hospital to Mr. and Lrs. Richard Rad of McHenry. Ir. and Mrs. Harold Thelen are parents of a daughter born Oct. 13 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock. Mr. and Mrs. William Casey are the parents of a daughter, born Oct. 16 at Memorial hospital. Camera Club The field trip was a success and the weather was clear and pleasant. Jack Salika's wife was there, and though handicapped by her brood, took some ft* shots. The placid lake in its wooded setting was a very inspiring sight indeed. There should be some very good entries submitted. The contest was black and white and limited to box cameras. The results of the recent public snapshot contest indicate that there is a great deal of talent in our area and it is hoped that the membership of tfe club will increase. There are many fine plans formulating for future activity and development of our program. The board meeting will be at the home of Girard Justen on Oct. 35. David Heckmann OBITUARIES FRED SCHAEFER Fred J. Schaefer, 63, of Chicago, a former resident of Johnsburg, died Friday, Oct. 13, in a Chicago hospital. Services were held Monday in St. Rita's Catholic church. Chicago. Survivors include the widow, Lillian; a daughter, Madonna Jackson, Chicago; two grandchildren; a sister, Mathilda Jerak of Chicago, formerly of McHenry; three brothers, Ben of McCullom Lake, Joseph and Peter Schaefer, McHenry. News About Our Servicemen ARTHUR NICHOLLS Arthur Nicholls, 5T, of Wauconda, died Sunday, Oct. 15, in a Lake county hospital following several months of failing health. Services were held Tuesday afternoon from a Wauconda funeral home. Survivors include two brothers, Clark of Burton's Bridge and Irwin of Volo; seven sisters, Frances Willoughby, Myrtle Lincoln, Jane Kennebeck, Marietta .Freund and Eleanor Kuester, all of Wauconda; Fern Stoffel of Geneva and Grace Piehl of Grayslake. LEO J. SMITH Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the George R. Justen & Son Chapel for Leo J. Smith, 70, of Chicago Heights, who died in his . home Monday, Oct. 16. Rev. George W. Martin will officiate at last rites, followed by burial in Woodland cemetery. Mr. Smith was born Aug. 18, 1891, in McHenry, son of John and Emma Smith. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion Post of Chicago Heights, the Masonic Lodge of McHenry and the McHenry Order of Eastern Star. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ray (Helen) Page, of McHenry and Mrs. Alice Frasier of Grinnell, Iowa; two brothers, Josie R. Smith of McHenry and Edward Smith of Crystal Lake. A sister, Mayme Boutelle, preceded him in death last July. JEROME AGU1RRE Jerome "Butch" Aguirre arrived home in Shalimar on his first furlough Oct. 10, and will remain until the twenty-ninth, when he will report to Carnp Pendleton. He has been stationed there since graduating from Marine boot camp on Sept. 15. WILLIAM MEYERS William Meyers, an eightyear resident of this community, died Sunday, Oct. 15, in Hines' Veterans' hospital. The family had been residing with the Vern Raifords in Lakeland Park. Mr. Meyers, 73 years of age, was a veteran of World War I, a member of McHenry Legion Post, No. 491, and of the World War I barracks of McHenry. A native of Chicago, he was for forty-two years a driver for the circulation department of the Chicago American. Survivors include his widow, Willie; a brother, Charles, of Dania, Fla., ?md a sister,1* Marie Liston, of Phoenix, Ariz. The body rested at the George R. Justen & Son chapel until Wednesday afternoon, when services were held. Interment was in Irving Park cemetery, Chicago. OTTO SCHMITT Last rites were held from t h e B a r r i n g t o n M e t h o d i s t church Saturday afternoon lor Otto B. Schmitt, 73, of Wonder Lake, a former resident of Barrington and Joliet, who died Thursday, Oct. 12. Mr. Schmitt was born Nov. 26, 1889, in Mount Olive. He had lived in Barrington for forty-three years, where he was in the sheet metal and heating business. The deceased was a member of the Order of Woodmen. Survivors include the widow, Ida-May; a daughter, Goldie Eggert of Joliet; twelve grandchildren and twenty-six greatgrandchildren. The body rested at the Stirlen funeral home in Barrington. ALVA J. CARTER, Jr. Alva John Carter, Jr., 45, of 1245 Valley road. Bannockburn, 111., a summer resident of 908 W. River Terrace, McHenry, died Sunday morning, Oct. 15, of a heart attack at his home here. Phillip Bartmann, William Sheehan, Walter Morris, Thomas Routt, Wayne Wautelet, Peter Viehweg, Ernest Gentert and William Engels. OKINAWA -- Participating in Exercise "Warm-Up", a joint naval-marine amphibious operation in the Okinawa area, while serving with Helicopter i Anti-Submarine Squadron 4 i a b o a r d t h e a n t i - s u b m a r i n e warfare support aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, is Navy Lt. Eugene J. Perry, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Perry of Rou/e 1, Wonder Lake. The squadron, a unit of the Seventh fleet, is one of the fleet's components participate ing in the exercise with units of the Third Marine division. Undergoing recruit training at the Naval Training center, Great Lakes, is Karl R. Weisenberger, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Weisenberger of 7701 E. Sunset drive, Wonder Lake. CADET FIDLER HAMED TO HONOR GUARD DRILL TEAM Cadet J. Beau Fidler, son of Mr. and Mi's. Paul E. Fidler, 3100 W. Riverstream drive, McHenry, has qualified for membership in Wentworth Military academy's honor guard drill team at Lexington, Mo., according to Master Sergeant Mason E. Poinsett of Wentworth's • Military department, sponsor of the group. Pre-requisites for admission include good soldierly bearing, proficiency with weapons, and superior mastery of intricate drill movements. The Wentworth honor guard performs a precision drill without verbal commands. It performs at special events on the campus and stages many offcampus exhibitions during the academic year. the Peter M. Justen chapel in McHenry to the Haben funeral home in Skokie following an inquiry conducted by Coroner Theron Ehorn. Services were held Wednesday, with burial in Memorial Park cemetery. LOCAL PTA TO HEAR SCIENTIST AT JUNIOR HIGH Hold Question, Answer Period Alter Address A highly informative program dealing with "Fall-Out and Shelters," a fifteen-minute address by Civil Defense Director John Shay, and a film on civil defense will be offered to the public tonight (Thursday) at the Junior high school beginning at 8:15 p.m. The McHenry Community P.T.A. was fortunate to obtain the services of C. J. Constantino, an Armour Research Foundation scientist, who is currently working on all phases of blast shelters for the government, to address the gathering. Following his address, Mr. Constantino, who holds several degrees in civil engineering will conduct a question and answer session on blast shelters in relation to our school population. John Shay, newly appointed director of civil defense, will enlighten residents on all matters of protection in the event of a nuclear blast on the local level. This program is very timely and should prepare our people for the first alert under the expanded civil defense program which will be held in the city on Oct. 26. ELKS DISTRIBUTE FLAG BUTTONS TO COUNTY SCHOOLS Ben Davis, exalted ruler of Elks Lodge, No. 1043 of Woodstock, has requested the Americanism committee of his lodge to secure and distribute 35,000 buttons with the American Flag on them. These buttons have been purchased and will be given away to over 24.000 school children in McHenry county during the week of Nov. 6. Mr. Davis hopes these buttons will be worn by all, the week proceeding Nov. 11, which is Veterans' Day. The Elks exalted ruler has also secured the use of a building (formerly Nolans' Appliances) for the purpose of displaying and selling new 50?Star American flags. The flags will be on display Oct. 28 through Oct. 30. The Elks Lodge will have personnel there to show the flags *nd to take orders. Delivery will bo made in two days. It is the hope of Mr. Davis that there will be an American flag flying from every home in McHenry county on Veterans' Day and all other holidays. The Elks lodge is doing this as a community service and the flags will be sold at coat. Judge Snapshots COURT BRIEFS In the police magistrate court of Donald Howard last Thursday evening, several fines were collected. , Frank Krohn of Woodstock paid a $10 fine for driving with no statt license ptetw. Fior^ Luciano of Wonder Lake hstd a $20 fine imposed for disorderly conduct in driving by .reeling rubber. H John Ruter of Lake couuty paid a $10 fine for speeding. In the court of Ju$tiCf of the Peace Charles M. Adams last Saturday, Joyce G« Doran of McHenry was fined $7 for speeding. , In the same court, Alice M. Bresnahan of McHenry paid an $8 fine for improper lane usage. SKATING PARTY BENEFITS NURSE SCHOLARSHIP FUND McHenry County Vpiture, No. 57$, of the 40^}, composed of thirty vovageuers dedicated to rehatytfttation and child welfare programs, will again this year award nurse scholarships to deserving young women of the county. To date, a total of twentyfour such scholarships have been given by this local county veterans' organization. The voiture sponsors many activities in order to raise funds so that these valuable scholarships can be awarded to deserving students. The lat<&£' activity is a midnight roller skating party. A gala evening is planned for young and old, including entertainment, contests and prizes.
