Tazewell, Mc'Henry c o u n t y s u p e r i n t e n d e n t of schools, a meeting was held at the court house annex to discuss the schools' role in the event of a nuclear attack. All public and private schools were invited, and several local c i v i l d e f e n s e l e a d e r s w e r e present. Alvin Querhammer. director of the McHenry county office of civil defense, and Anton Perne, coordinator of civil defense adult education in the office of the superintendent of public instruction, addressed the group. Mr. Querhammer explained what ha» been done in the county concerning civil defense and asked for a committee of five or seven school people to work with other agencies in the county to set up a county-wide disaster plan in case of a nuclear attack. Mr. Perne discussed the funct i o n of t h e s c h o o l i n c a s e of a t tack. He stated that the schod) board has ah obllgfetkm to paN ticipate in the dtia&te* pfograin in three ways: 1--by instituting or strengthening the pupil safety program. This program mqkes buildings and grounds as safe as possible against disaster and- sets lip procedures to enable students to survive disasters. 2--By developing a diadstfer protection education program. This long-range program looks to working with the schools to provide a good understanding of civics, communication, mathematics, history, and other related fields with the feeling that students well-versed irt these fields will become adults possessing not only these skills as such, but also the Insight and understanding that will be needed in working together for survival. ^ ^ 3--By supporting in othet ways the local disaster protec* tion program. The schools cah make their facilities available for adult clashes, or for shelter or other uses. Mr. Perne stated his staff was very small, but that he hoped to have a civil defense class started in t,he. cOUnty some time in April. Certified teachers attending these glasses would be qualified instructor* to teach adult 'civil*' defense classes. The nonagenarian, for many years a local resident, has three sisters, two of whom are over 90 and the other approaching that mark. Mrs. Alice Keough of Half Day was 100 on Dec. 15.
