One man was heard to remark that his thermometer went down as far as twenty-four below, but it takes nerve to tell that. St. Clara Court of Lady Foresters will hold a public card narty at the McHenry House ^Wednesday afternoon and evening, Jan. 17. Progressive cinch and dominoes will be played and refreshments served. Admission 25 cents. W. A. Fisher, who for the past few years has conducted a milk route in McHenry, has disposed of his interests to Stephen H. Freund, who has engaged Simon Michels to operate the route for him. Mr. r'isher has purchased the Henry E. Buch meat market on Water street taking possession this week. Bargains at M. J. Walsh's include men's, heavy fleeced underwear, 75 cents per suit; ladies' heavy fleeced union suits, 40 cents; and heavy fleeced vests and pants, 19 j>ents each. w From quarter of a century news comes the item that Mc- Henry's toboggan slide is in a flourishing condition and was opened last night with a big crowd, the military band furnishing music for the occasion. The slide is 800 feet long and greased lightning is nowhere with the speed obtained in the descent. To know how it is ^yourself, you must try it. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Jan. 12, 1922 Ben Brefeld, who recently came into possession of the Wirfs property facing Main street, has been tearing down ,£all of .the old. buildings, including an old barn and ice house, and in' their stead will erect a private garage. The sewerage improvement question has again been revived in McHenry, and this time it looks as if the improvement is going to be put over. Mayor Simon Stoffel informs us that he had been successful in the sale of a lot on Waukejfetan street, just across the street froiji the old livery barn, to a Chicago gentleman who is to construct a modern laundry building on the property. Leo Heimer, youngest son of Mrs. Helena Heimer, and a graduate of the local high school, has entered the employ of the Public Service company in the capacity of meter ^reader and inspector. ® That the members of the good roads committee, named at the meeting at Justen's hotel last Friday evening, do not mean to fall asleep on the job is seen by the prompt action taken by that body. Members of the committee arc Ben Stilling, Dr. C. H. Fegers, Everett Hunter, Sr., William Smith. Dr. R. G. Chamberlin and George Johnson. Very good progress has been made by our ice harvesters the past week. Math Bauer has completed the filling of his own as well as the brewery lie house, while it is expected that the house, owned by C. Unti, will be filled by this evening. The ice harvested during the last few days averaged about eleven inches in thickness. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Taken from the Fufes of Jan. 14, 1937 The McHenry Brewing company, now known probably as McHenry s foremost industry, has commenced the building of an addition on the rear of the brewery on Pearl street, giving increased cellar and main floor capacity. This is the third time the capacity of the brewery has been increased since it was taken over by the McHenry Brewing company more than three years agoj Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wynkoop of Woodstock will be grieved to learn of the death of their little eleven-monthsold granddaughter, Deborah Lamphere, only child of Dr. and Mrs. George Lamphere of Rockford. The baby died * of pneumonia in a Rockford hospital Tuesday noon. Frank Ward, an old time resident here, who had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Rasmussen in Chicago, passed away Thursday. Funeral services were held from St. Patrick's church Saturday, with burial in the church cemetery. The annual masquerade sponsored by McHenry chapter of the O.E.S. will be held at Stoffel's hall Jan. 23. Music by the Frankie Gans orchestra. Lunch will be sold during the evening Admission 25 cents. Harry Eldridge, 61 years old a native of McHenry, where he spent his early life, died of a heart attack at his home in River Forest Tuesday. Burial was in the family lot in Woodland cemetery, McHenry. Mrs. C. S. Howard, who will be 80 years old on Friday of next week, is at the home of her son, Ray Howard, recovering from injuries sustained in a fall at her home Sunday. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Dec. 29, 1921 The hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. George Kuhn was thoroughly enjoyed by a company of friends at a noon day dinner at their home on Monday of this week, after which a pleasant afternoon was spent in conversation, recitations and selections on the victrola. Guests were Mrs. S. Button, Mrs. L Lawless, Mrs. N. ttolly, Mrs. E. Wheeler, Mrs. S. Sherburne and Miss Anna Sherburne. From Ostend comes the news that C. E. Jecks feels sure of a mild winter and early spring. He saw a tneadowlark sitting on a bunch of corn, singing a merry lay and it was not of short direction. He went a second time to the corn field, a neighbor accompanying h i m. and it was still there singing. The McHenry post American Legion, with the assistance of the members of the Just Us club, will stage a New Year's party at Legion hall which promises to be one of the biggest social events ever held here. William Stoffel, a highly respected citizen who during the past thirty-five years has been active in the civic, business and p o l i t i c a l l i f e o f M c H e n r y . passed away at his late home on Maple avenue Friday evening at the age of 59 years. Miss Margaret Miller and Mr. George Stoffel surprised their many friends here by announcing their marriage, which ^ook place at the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. H. J. Garner, in Chicago at high noor. on Tuesday of this week. i John R. Freund. son of Mr. j and Mrs. Peter Freund, who j reside on the Wheeler fai'v. i south of town, was among those j who had exhibits at the big poultry show held in Chicago recently. Mr. Freund exhibited three Embden geese which were awarded third and fifth prizes, which he considers very good considering that his birds were in competition with world winners. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Dec. 31, 1936 Forty members of the McHenry Community high school, classes of '31 and '33, with their wives and husbands met Saturday night in a joint reunion at the McHenry House and gave form to that much talked about organization, "The Alumni Association of McHenry Community High School," w i t h u n l i m i t e d m e m b e r s h i p . Harold Lindsay and Jack Purvey were elected respectively as tentative president and vicepresident. The heat wave which prevailed over Christmas in this vicinity, bringing a belated Indian summer, made Christmas Day balmy and warm and not to be outdone by any Florida or California weather. The weather this year was in direct contrast to Christmas weather a year ago, when snowdrifts and sub-zero weather prevailed. F r i d a y w a s t h e w a r m e s t Christmas day in the history of the Chicago weather bureau, with the temperature reaching fifty degrees. Miss Alma Volling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Volling of Lake Zurich, and Mr. Howard Vasey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Job Vasey of McHenry, were married at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran church at Barrington Tuesday of last week. A family reunion made Christmas a merry one at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Freund, when their children and their families spent the dav with them. They enjoyed dinner at Niesen's restaurant, returning home for a visit while the youngsters tried out their new, toys around the Christmas tree. Mrs. Mary Green, 68 years old, died at her home here Monday, Dec. 28, after a short illness. Mrs. Nizpa Holly, 86, a pioneer of the community, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, and death came to Mrs. Josephine Frett of Johnsburg on Thursday, Dec. 24, at the age of 72. DIRECTORS OF TITLE COMPANY ELECT OFFICERS Re-elected directors at the annual stockholders' meeting of the McHenry County Title company Friday afternoon were William M. Carroll, Sr., Herbert T. Cooney, David R. Joslyn, Richard E. Duff, Henry W. Sandeen, G. Allan Julin, Jr., and Francis E. O'Connor. The directors then convened and named Mr. Duff to the presidency; Mr. Carroll and John D. Byers as vice-presidents; Mr. Julin as secretary and Mr. Cooney as treasurer. The president appointed Earl J. Paddock--as assistant treasurer; Walter M. Endee, title officer; William E. Wonder Lake KIWANIS CLUB SPONSORS BENEFIT SHOW FEBRUARY 11 Jane Ducey The minstrel show the local Kiwanians are sponsoring for the benefit of the Retarded Children's teacher fund will be presented Sunday, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m. at Harrison school according to Floyd Leigh. Tickets are available now from any Kiwanian. Fourteen Christmas baskets were distributed to area residence in need on Dec. 23, was the report of Jim Robison at a recent meeting. Jan. 29 is inspirational night in DeKalb. Drama Club Meeting Notice There will be a meeting of the Drama Club Thursday, Jan. 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the basement of the Tom McMillan home, 4903 East Wonder Lake road. Observe National 4-H Week The Junior Wonder Workers will arrange the window display in observance of National 4-H Week at Paul's Hardware and Variety store this year, according to Connie Abel, reporter for the club. Bible Church News Friday night, Jan. 19, cars will leave the Bible church to take the men of the congregation to the Men's Fellowship in Villa Park. The Couples Club will meet Saturday, Jan. 27. The Men's Fellowship meets Monday, Jan. 29. Mid-week prayer service Is held every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for all the family. Guest speaker, Tom Hash? and family were enjoyed by the congregation last Sunday. Mr. Hash, who operates a Service Men's Center in the Panama Canal Zone, spoke at the morning service, and showed slides of the family's work in Panama at the evening service. Re-inoculation is to be done by the completion of the year of the previous inoculation. All persons bittend by dogs are required to report all details to the County Veterinarian and to their local veterinarian. Stray dogs will be impounded for seven (7) days. The owner will be charged for the impounding, board and inoculation. Dogs that have bitten someone will be impounded for ten (10) days, or more, for observation -- impounding, board and inoculation to be paid by owner, plus laboratory expense for head shipping and rabies test in positive and suspicious dogs. Persons who refuse or fail to comply with Illinois Rabies Control Law are subject to a fine of not less than $25.0(1 or more than $100.00. Thfe new plan of operation calls for these meetings to be held monthly on the first Thursday of each month, with district operating committees and institutional representatives attending.
