Herrmann Attorney 3412 W. Elm St. McHenry, 111. (Pub. Jan. 18, 25, Feb. 1, 1962) SENIOR CITIZENS GIVE REASON FOR SAFETY CONCERN Americans are living longer and driving more and those facts are merging to confront the nation with an over-age headache today, tomorrow and in the years to come. Ever since citizens began killing themselves in traffic mishaps safety experts have sweated to reduce the tolls. They have worked, by and large, to save the lives of Americans of all ages and if any one age group has received special attention it's been tne young. There is no reason to abandon efforts directed at 'teenagers' driving habits but there appears to be cause for concern about those of their grandparents. According to population reports the number of licensed drivers m the United States over 65 years of age will increase by at least 25 per cent in the next eight years. This does not imply that older persons are necessarily bad drivers. Many a man 75 rides behind the steering wheel today accident-free after severai decades of motoring. But the National Safety Council says "Older persons have special difficulties in driving." Moreover, the Council says. "Older people are more susceptible to injury and death -- what may be a minor accident for a young person might be serious or fatal for an older person." "Failure to understand traffic problems and ignorance of his own physical limitations are the senior citizen's principal handicaps in traffic," the Council says. Another factpr is inability to judge speed of approaching vehicles, the Council said. It pointed out that "most older people do not see and hear as well as when they were young* er and even if perception and judgment remain near normal, the sheer physical ability to react with the speed and vigor required in an emergency is usually dulled." Of about 87 million licensed driver^ in the United States last year, an estimated 6.7 per cent were over 65. This 6.7 per cent was involved in 5.5 per cent of the 18.5 million accidents and 7 per cent of the fatal accidents. Figures that would have more meaning would show involvement rate based on the number of miles driven. The study uncovered close relations between types of accidents and the driving habits that lead to them. Rear-end collisions, the number one accident problem on expressways, are caused by drivers who are in the habit of following too closely, the survey showed. Drivers develop this habit because of impatience, inattention, ignorance of stopping requirements, or failure to anticipate changing traffic conditions or the mistakes of other drivers. Right-angle collisions at intersections are caused by drivers who habitually assume they a r e p r o t e c t e d on t h r o u g h streets or who are unwilling to yield the right-of-way. These habits are caused by lack of understanding of traffic control devices or an aggressive attitude while driving, according to the survey. Single-car accidents, common in rural areas, are caused by drivers who habitually drive too fast for visibility and road conditions, or who continue to drive when they are overly fatigued, the study reports. Another cause of single-car accidents, in which a car puns off the road or strikes immovable obstructions, is the habit oil day-dreaming to relieve the monotony of long drives. Sideswipes result from drivers who have developed the habit of changing lanes, making turns, or pulling out from curbs without signalling their intentions, according to the study. Head-on collisions generally involve drivers who are in the habit of passing other cars without first making sure that passing can be done safely. The way to avoid these accidents is to develop strong, positive driving habits, the 6tudy indicates. In this manner, the strong force of habit which causes accidents can be turned into a method of avoiding them. announcing a repeat of the most successful used car sale in history!
