P"qte Four THE Mc! Y PLAINDEALER Thursday, February 8, 1962 SO I HEAR One way to start a column is to try to straighten out a goofed up story of last week. I bi We ran a story about St. Mary's Grade School basketball team winning the Triounty Championship. That part was correct, but such a mixup in names! Denny Jackson and Jackie Hester were left out." We are sorry. Further, the name Ron Anderson was used instead of Gary Anderson. At least we had the last name correct. More -- It was Tom Harrison, not Frank,, who- should have been listed. We won't pass the buck this time, but if this correction is not right there are two fellows who will have to sign affidavits next week -- the fellow who gave us the first list and the one who told us we were wrong. We like to read papers and even enjov a peak at the pages printed for the little women once in a while. On this cold, cold day we find it is time to buy spring hats. We think Grandma was sensible in wearing a knitted (or mavbe it was crochet) hood in winter time. Last week we saw some goofy numbers labeled "Hats That Will Npver Come Off." They never should have been on. Sickness has played heck with our office and the girl u ho chocks bowling scores has been bowled over by the flu. We do find the Majors still getting a lot of timber. I,. Smith has a 257 game. R. Larson leads with a 246-641 series. R. Cynowa was next with 243-630. Eleven bowlers in this group were over 600 while as many more were just a wiggle or twist away. Paul Morenz scored 38 points against Crystal "Lake Tigers Friday night and has drawn the attention of the metropolitan press in a big way. For a fellow who thinks baseball and football are his games, he is a handy one to have on your basketball team. At the recent Marian Central football banquet, sponsored by the Fathers' Club, Mike Purvey was chosen, by his team mates, as the "Most Valuable" player for 1961. Joe Blenner of McHenry shared honors as the most improved backfield man. Both names have local interest and we congratulate the boys. Wlndup -- Please read story on Wrestl i n g t o u r n a m e n t . M c H e n r y Warrior basketball teams travel to Palatine Friday night. Pray for an early spring and, as Dick Jager would say, "Stick with those White Sox." From Harry Eckland comes a clipping from the Los Angeles, Calif., paper telling that Don Bollman, son of Mrs. James Braden of Los Angeles, and the late Bernie Bollman, who were residents of Pistakee Bay for many years, was a member of the first place team in the Palm Springs Golf Classic held the past weekend in Palm Springs. James Braden was a member of the fourth place team. WARRIORS HIT HOOP 10 BEAT CRYSTALJJtKE Morenz Scores 38 In Leading Way To 84 To 67 Victory The Warrior varsity basketball team shot back into winning ways last Friday night to win a decision victory over the visiting Tigers of Crystal Lake, 84 to 67. One could not move far into a story of the game without mention of 38 points scored by Paul Morenz on 17 baskets and 4 free throws. Those baskets were sunk from every position and every spot within basket range. It was in the first period that the Warriors gaineu .heir edge, outscoring Crystal Lake 28 to 16. From theiv ,n the game was plenty cloi*? to be of interest without causing fast heart beats. The Warriors Jheid the scoring edge in all but the third quarter, but this time they held within two points in thai troublesome period. Each team had 21 fouls as the officials turned in what must be termed a highly acceptable performance. Actually the officials allowed the boys to play basketball in the early stages and then tightened their calls as the game^ progressed. Coach Fulton substituted freely early in the game and the plan worked. Coach Wagner tried many combinations, but seemed to lack the horses (or Tigers) that Crystal Lake has had in the past years. Too bad it only lasted one day. Sub-zero temperature and strong winds can convince the hardiest fishermen to stay home, close to the fireside. We have noticed that many people in this area have built private ponds. We have heard that many of them spent considerable amounts of money stocking them, only to have their ponds "freeze out" in the winter. Removing strips of now from your pond or lake, and keeping them clear will allow sufficient sunlight penetration through the ice to stimulate small plants to produce oxygen. However, at least 15 percent of the pond or lake's surface should be cleared for this method to be wholly effective. A survey on pheasant kills has been taken by wildlife biologists. The results showed that hunters using No. 4 shot crippled and lost 29 birds for every 100 bagged. Those usin:1: No. 5 and 6 shot crippled and lost 24 birds per 100 bagged, while those who used No. 7\i> shot ^ lost only 19 fop every 100 birds. f These results back up our contention and that of many others that smaller size shot penetrates deeper and produces more clean kills. In fact, tests have been conducted with copper and nickel plated shot of all sizes to determine which patterned and penetrated beat. Results showed that the lighter shot sizes are, by far, the best for upland bird shooting. Rumor hap it that a longer shotgun deer season may be in the offing for 1962. Who knows? Maybe this year it might even be. worth applying for a permit. Daily Pinups The best way to rise with the lark is to avoid the midnight swallows.
