Page Four THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday. iFebruary 22. 1962 SOI HEAR... The snow did blow last Sun day night, but not hard enough to keep a large and happj crowd from attending the Forester bowling party at the American Legion home. Sure -- the girls were there! It was their night to watch over those little envelopes with the prize mone^- enclosed. No foolin! It wouldn't have be<£n half as much fun without those jolly girls, especially at dance time. After a couple of sarsaparill& s, we sat down to a real fine meal prepared by Tillie Gerasch and her famous crew. Tom Sutton was chairman of the tournament this year and everybody said he did a bangup job. Tom had the old pro, Fred Meyer, MC the program and things moved along just dandy. Andy McCarroll was the All- Events champ with 1808. This included a 640 (actual pinsi series. Marty Klapperich won the Singles with 730 (664 actual pins) Jim Larkin had a 663 actual pin series. George M. Freund (that great Cub fan) had high game, 264. In the Doubles, Joe Kuna and Paul Steffan were tops with 1303. Team Events went to Ted Pitzen's team with a 3058 total. Trophy winners remained up front, then pinned corsages on their iadies fauv SIX McHENRY GRAPPLERS WIN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS AND II QUALIFY FOR SECTIONAL 11 Reach Finals McHenry high school wrestlers, recent North Suburban conference winners, piled up 121 points to take the State District tournament held at Barrington high school last though not taking first, lost in the finals but qualified for the Sectional Tournament. A1 Baur twelve weight classes, eleven (138), lost to Bulley of Crystal After Joe Etten 'talked us into a "grasshopper" to settle the big meal, we headed for home with the feeling that this was one of the best parties of all time. Real people. Our Warrior varsity basketball team played to a capacity crowd here Friday night and played one of tfyeir best games of the season in spite of losing to Zion in the closing minutes. The boys gave it all they had and what they had in the first half was plenty good. We would like to show one and all a picture of "The Ole Station Agent" that Nick Pitzen brought in to us this week. Said Nick, "You are always writing about being on the farm 100 years ago so thought you would' enjoy this." We do go back a few years in McHenry, but nothing like Nick. You wouldn't think it to look at him, but he's the fellow who drove the Indians out of Pistakee Bay area and turned it over to' the first settlers. Some of our local men are jerking like all get out to make a grand success of the Father and Daughter banquet at Marian Central next Sunday night. Word is out that it will be one of the outstanding events of the school year. The Shamrocks will meet again next Monday night. New uniforms have been ordered. The boys showed great willingness to cooperate in rebuilding the diamond last fall and are rarin' to go at it again this spring. of McHenry's wrestlers reached the final^ind thus qualified for the State Sectional Tournament tci be held at Wauke- ;an high school this weekend. Dowhin, Fuchs, Wahl In Tough Matches Captain Jim Dowhin (145), lost a heartbreaking match to Hudson of Barrington 2-1. Jim had beaten Hudson twice before, once 11-2, but Jim is still hampered by a twisted ankle. Wayne Fuchs (165), probably the most outstanding 165 pounder in this area, except for Lewis of Barrington who beat Wayne again 4-0. Fuchs also took runner-up honors in the Conference last week in losing 2-0. Bob Wahl (180), got off to a bad start early in his match with Grove of Barrington. Bob fought hard but couldn't recover his early loss of pdints and Grove went on to win 6-3. This was the first time Wahl has lost to Grove in the four times they have met. I.H.S.A. MARY'S GYM By Jack Walsh Ice fishermen have not been faring so well on the Chain of Lakes. Even the fish in Brandenburg Lake have been inactive lately. \>Once in a while someone will have a bit of luck and go home with a fair catch, but on the average the local ice fishing has been just plain "lousy" this winter. Whitewater Lake in Wisconsin- has been producing some nice bluegills this winter, but not consistently. Last week the perch were biting at Lake Geneva. Now they seem to have lost interest, We have heard all kinds of excuses for the below average fishing this year. Not enough sunlight, too much snow on the ice,-, wind "blowing frcln the wrong direction, and so on. But it is our contention that the main reason is too few fishermen on the ice to really locate the schools. Bitter cold, strong winds and snow have discouraged hundreds of fishermen this winter. But we think that when things warm up and just before the ice goes out, catches will far exceed those of past years. Time will tell. Mathon was w*rong this winter. We could lji too. The Lake County Shell and Hook Sportsman's Club will hold a fox drive Sunday, Feb. 25. It will start at 8 a.m. and the directions are: five miles west of McHenry on Route 120 to signs; one half-mile off Greenwood Road turn north on Charles Road to signs. There will be a small entrance fee and the hunt will be restricted to shotguns only. No dogs will be allowed. Free cofarid cake will be served. Any hunter will agree that more drives of this nature are needed in this area, but to be successful there must be a good turnout. The McHenry Sportsman's Club is holding its monthly prize trap shoot Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. on the club grounds at Pistakee Bay. Food will . be .served in the clubhouse. The club has instituted a new rule whereby previous winners of the day may not shoot in squads of now-winn^f without handicapping themselves one bird. This system fives everyone a chance to Wfe and has worked out nicethe (dub's past few shoots. Mary's In Exciting 40 to 39 Overtime Contest McHenry Junior High hit its peak at the Tri-County Conference tournament this past weekend by pulling the championship right from under the noses of the conference's two leading teams. Ed Sobotkiewicz's charges parlayed excellent rebounding with hot outshooting by Richard Soda and clutch center shots by Glervi i1 of urvir»* ftr-vv iiip uC1 i• .> luaxv »y '-"-v. --• t a ni> cm exciting over time contest 40- 39. In the finals against Hickory Hill on Saturday night, the Warriors of McHenry repeated their rebounding performance to maintain a consistent lead over their opponents. Adding to this, some hustling defense and sharp-shooting by Jim Morenz, they had more than enough to assure a 33-28 victory. On Tuesday evening the champions gave no hint of their great improvement when they barely overcame Lake Zurich 27-25. But Sobotkiewicz's "super-chargers" left no doubt about it in their final two games. McHenry fans had a most satisfying night when they also witnessed the other r local entry, St. Mary's, walk off with third place by subduing Lake Zurich 37-26. MemWrs of the new championship team are; Jim Karls, Glenn Olsen, Jim Morenz, Richard Soda, Pochard ! o-sman, Ilal Eurich, Tom Evans, Gary Prather, Alan Olsen, Richard Peterson, Richard Kesterson, Jim Martin; Ricky Greenley, Peter Newendrop, and Bill Hanson. , z In Fist Action Game The McHenry Warriors tossed a big bomb at leagueleading Zion last Friday night before a standing room only crowd in the home gym, only to lose out 87-79 in the final minutes of play. The Warriors hit from all points in the first quarter to forge ahead 27-16. Harry May was the leader of the band at this point and eventually piled up 21 points for the game. Paul Morenz did his scoring in the first and fourth periods to total 27 points. Eddie Moore, Junior guard, put on quile a shooting show with outside shooting to lead all performers with 29 points.^ While the Zee-Bees staged a comeback in the last half to show why they rate top billing, the game was much closer than the final score would indicate. With 2 or 3 point margins, the winners went into a control game ' that forced McHenry fouling in hopes of gaining possession of the ball.
