Homemakmg Tips THE DISHWASttfiR Many homemakers ask, "Is a dishwasher worth the price?" University of Illinois extension equipment s p e c i a l i s t G lend a Pifer says it may be, depending on how you use it and whether it does what you want. Research has shown that, for the greatest return on your investment. you should use a dishwasher to its fullest Capacity. This means washing everything possible in it regularly. Of course, the size and capacity will limit the amount that can be washed: This means that, to wash pots and pans as well as dinnerware, it is often necessary to run two or three loads through the machine. The higher drying temperature of some dishwashers may exclude some plastic dishes that are affected by heat, or wooden ware that may.dry out and crack. Water and detergent action may also mar patterns on hand-painted or gold-trimmed china unless the machine has a "gentle wash" option. - Miss Pifer explains that boW well a dishwasher wofks Will depend to a large degree on water conditions. Very ; hard water and high amounts ,• -of iron in the water spell troi^ble. With these conditions,, iron stain, film and spotting on dishes and silverware may be excessive. Some manufa ct u re r s are combating the spotting ' problem by putting a wetting agent dispenser in the dishwasher. Some homemakers weigh a dishwasher's worth in terms of the time it saves compared with washing by hand.' What this difference is depends, according to Miss Pifer, 6ti your definition of dishwashing. Orte study in Ohio showed that, if you count the time involved in thr entire process of dishwash* inq, using a machine cUts the time in half. If, however,' yoti consider 'dishwashing ortly washing, rinsing and wiping, a dishwasher will reduce the time only about one-fifth. Dishwashers make dishes more sanitary than hand dishwashing, chiefly because of the higher water temperature that is possible in the madhine thfen in washing by hand. - Another asset of the dt&ji-, washer is that it provides a handy, out-of-sight place for dlrlv dishes during meal pljeparation. • . K. t BALDINOER'S FEDERAL TAX HORIZONS 3--TAX STATUS YoUJr tax status affects your rate Of tax and other tax privileges. Before checking the block on pfage 1 of Form 1040, consider your situation. You may be eligible for a certain status which will save you tax. A couple may file a joint return if they were husband -and wife on the last day of the tax year. Yes, even if they mar- Hed on December 31, 1961. They may also file jointly even if living apart unless there is a final court order of separation or divorce by the end of the year. No joint return can be filed if one of the parties is a nonresident alien at any time during 1961 or if they have different tax years or were divorced or legally separated on or before the end of the tax year. If you file a joint return with your wife, you cannot later change it to a separate return for the particular year. But if the husband and wife file separate returns and later change their minds, they mayfile an-amended return jointly but must do so within 3 years after jttie due date of the return.- , Don't forget the following in connection with joint returns: 1. Both, husband and wife must Sigh Unless F( rm 936 or other Written authorization is givert for one to sign for the other. 2. Even, if you filed separate declarations of estimated tax. you may. ffle a joint return. 3. Even if you file a joint declaration of estimated tax, you may file separate returns. 4. You may file jointly in one year and separately in a later year. 5. Each is liable for the whole tax as well as any additional tax which the Government later claims as a deficien^ y^This can cause financial heaclTfbhes later. 6. One spouse can pay the whole tax without worrying about a taxable gift for gift tax purposes. 7. If each has self-employment income, each must file separate Schedules C and C-3 to compute the social security self-employment tax. 8. Retirement income credit is not affected and each is entitled to the credit where applicable and available. 9. Each i? entitled to the $50 dividend jexclusion if each has dividend income. It is a good idea to figure tne tax jointly and separately. It may pay to experiment. Hero are some examples: John has adjusted gross income of $6,000. Mary _has a similar amount. John 'was ill and paid out $1,000 for medical expenses. He would be allowed to deduct $820 on a separate return which if he filed a joint return with Mary, the deduction would he only $640. (Because 3 per cent of the income is not deductible for medical expenses where John is under 65.) John has a net capital loss of $1,000 available as a deduction from ordinary income. If Mary has a similar capital loss, the deduction from ordinary income is limited to $1,000 on a joint return. Each could claim $1,000 on a separate return. You may also find calculations helpful where John has a gain on the sale of property used in his trade or business while Mary has some losses. Similarly, where one spouse has a net operating loss from business or casualty. BAD RISKS A bad risk is a driver shunned by insurance companies, other motorists, and probably by his own dog. According to the Institute for Safer Living, a succession of mishaps or accidents labels a person as a bad risk. Such a record can be avoided by driving soberly, skillfully, and with consideration toward pedestrians and other drivers at all times. SHOP IN McHENRY ftadfator Inspection!
