TOURNAMENT TICKETS Tickets for the McHenry high school basketball game on March 7 at Crystal Lake, scene of the regional tournament, are available at the local high school office. Daily Pinups Presence of mind is preferable to absence of thought. An ultra-conservative is a cautious character who will not concede that there's a first time for everything. Sometimes a fight over what is right turns into a feud over what is left. In the school of experience there are geniuses, dunces, but no "teacher's pet." The nut behind the wheel is responsible for the most accidents, but luckily is replaceable. He spoke a word so tenderly A word -- a wee, small thing, And yet it stirred lonely heart, To hope again, and sing. ANONYMOUS CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY The Wheelers celebrated their first anniversary Saturday, Feb. 24, with a party at the home of Al. Phannenstill President Bob Wiles read the history of the club. Adars of Wonder Lake was granted a probationary permit. HcHENRY JUNIOR HIGH WINS Nl LEGION J10PHY The McHenry Junior High School team became first to engrave its name on the new American Legion Travelling Trophy, Sunday February 25th, after downing St. Mary's 45 to 39 in the finals at St. Mary's Gvm. St. Mary's had retired the old trophy last year with three consecutive championships. In the near wire-photo finish McHenry bagged three points to ice the game in the last ten seconds. Again Cpach Sabotkiewicz's Warriors demonstrated excellent rebounding and deadly out-shootirig to keep the pressure on St. Mary's throughout the last three quarters. ' The new champions had an even narrower squeeze in the semi-finals, nicking Johnsburg Public School 30-29. Johnsburg led at the half and at the three quarter mark by one point. St. Mary's captured its semi-final game by exploding ih the second half to bury St. Patrick's 52-21. The losers played an excellent first half in which they trailed only 21 to 16. The battle for third place was an uneven contest with most of St. Patrick's first string playing in another game at Arlington Heights. JohnsbuFgburg Public School pressed to an overwhelming 55-15 victory. Thursday night, February 2% St. Patxnck's and McHenry rang up first round decisions over St. John's of Johnsburg and Harrison of Wonder Lake respectively. In a surprisingly tough battle, after building up a sizeable lead, St. Patrick's barely staved off a rousing rally to emerge victorious 47- 44. The title-holders walked through flu-weakened Harrison team 36-13. Coach Sabotkiewicz used his starters only in the first period. * The roster of the new Champions include: Jim Karls, Glen Olsen, Jim Morenz; Richard Soda, Gary Prather, Richard Lossman, Alan Olsen, Richard Peterson, Rich Kesterson, Jim Martin, Bill Hanson, Ricky Greenley, Hal Eurich, Peter Newendorp and Tom Evans. By Jack Walsh To mention fishing in the area would be a waste of time, so we won't trifle with it this week. It's a good time to clean, repair and prepare your tackle for spring and summer fishing. Many anglers find that an old tooth brush or pipe cleaner soaked with gasoline is quite helpful in cleaning small reel parts or to get at those hard to reach places in a gun. All line should be checked for kinks, frayed ( spots and other weak places. Guides on rods . should be checked for rough edges that might damage lines and loose ones wrapped or replaced. Kits for repairing and refinishing fishing rods are available at any sporting goods store. If you decide to do your own refinishing in preference to sending your rods to the factory -- try applying the varnish or lacquer with a feather. This process is a bit more time consuming, but results in a smoother and more even job that can be obtained by using a brush. Remington Arms Co. has announced that it is now producing its revolutionary plastic shot shell in "Express" loads in 16 and 20 gauge. Previously, these -shells were sold only in 12 gauge and cost approximately 50 cents or more per box than the paper body shells, but now they will be priced the same as the paper shells. These shells are constructed with a brass-coated steel base and plastic body and their greatest - advantage is that they will take any amount of beating or soaking and still function perfectly. We wonder what our muzzleloading forefathers would think of such modern improvements.. Five Wrestlers - Fr®m iCIS Place In Secttonal Met! RETARDED FUND INCREASED $406 BY MINSTREL SHOW Generous response of the community to the recent minstrel show sponsored by Wonder Lake Area Kiwanis enabled the club to present $406 to the teacher's benefit of the McHenry County Retarded Children's Fund. President Joseph Sullivan announced that gross proceeds were $536. Expenses of $130 included chartered bus to transport the minstrel from Lakeland Park, program printing, school ' rental and custodiah charges, and some costume rentals.. Sullivan called upon Floyd Leigh, Kiwanis member who also was in the cast, to present the check to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Meineke and Wally Laurence, directors of the minstrel, who in turn presented the check to Rev. Richard Wright. Rev. Wright, the Kiwanian's man of the year, will deposit the check in the teacher's fund. Rev. Wright noted that a major share of the success of the special educational program can be attributed to the efforts of the Wonder Lake Kiwanis club. Sullivan observed that Rev. Wright has been instrumental in general support of the program, in providing space and for getting the facilities approved. Principal speaker for the evening was William Carroll, Jr., Woodstock attorney and candidate for congress from the new 12th district comprising McHenry, Lake and Boone counties. Carroll was introduced by attorney Francis G. Higgins. Wonder Lake. Paul Eberle, postmaster, was named Kiwanis institutional representative to the new Boy Scout troop being formed. SHARP CURVES Baseball players and motorists have one thing in common -- they often miss sharp Cdtves. The Institute for Safer Living warns that despite modern road improvements, many sharp curves still exist which are a prime location for acci- ¥ dents. Motorists should always decrease speed before entering a curve, even a gradual one. Among other reasons, a change of speed helps to bring increased mental alertness. McHENRY THEATRE 204 N. Gr. Pfi.
