Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, March 8, 1962 1962 North Suburbaan Conference And State District Wrestling Champions SO I HEAR... Large crowds have watched rthe McHenr^ Warriors in their last home games. Somebody up there in those stands must like those boys. We are among them. - We didn't have a winner this year, but. we thought the boys were giving it a great try. It seemed to us all season that we needed one more good man to round out the team. First sign of spring: Mary Miller, Plaindealer bookkeeper, has a new fly swatter right handy above her desk. We get a pretty good cross section of opinions from those who are loyal fans. Various opinions are offered when you have a losing team. Our opinion is that we did not have championship material this year. A little three year old girl asked her mother not to wash her face "until I'm five". It's a true story and tickled our funny bone. . . LISTEN! -- The regional basketball tournament will be broadcast live over WRMN-FM-94.3 ortM the FM Dial. ^ The broadcast is sponsored by various business places1* in the towns participating. Size was a big factor in the Libertyville game last Friday night. They had big boys. But, their reputation for not being able to handle the press was given further substantiation when our team got around to using the press in the last quarter. At that, we had all the chance- in the world to win from the' fret? throw line. At the end of the game, three Wildcats and two Warriors were on the bench. We can't find ourself clapping when a rival player fouls out of the game. Frankly, we would like to see both teams finish with their strongest lineups. When the rule makers get around to finding a way to keep those players in the game, it will suit our fancy. In every other sport you suffer penalties, but stay in the game. Only for deliberate, dirty fouls would we give 'em the bounce. Paul Morenz scored 18 points and took top scoring honors for the season in the conference. Paul had 326 points for the s e a s o n . W o o d s t o c k ' s R o g e r Eckert had 325, and Ron Kozlicki of Palatine had 321. It was a real race for these boys and the pressure was on in the last part of the, season. Ron Stanton, one of Zion's greats about 5 years ago, still holds the season scoring record with 334 points. Morenz tied Joe Reading's (Crystal Lake) record of 126 field" goals in a season. Records are made to be broken. Think of Wilt the Stilt Chamberlin getting 100 points in a game. He must have stood under the nets all night and dumped 'em in. That should bring about a rule that only boys under 6 feet be allowed to take shots inside the free throw circle and lines. Wouldn't we have fun on that rules committee! DAILY PINUPS Wisdom is the wee prompter that tells usf what to do next when it comes to the worst. Obstacles are the oblique giants that confront us when we take our eyes off the goal. It's when' we forget ourselves that we-do things that are remembered by others. A man is sometimes judged by his taste in ties, a woman by' her hue in hats. Life teaches a lesson; I hold it a truth, That a smile in the heart is the secret of youth; For age cannot harm one, nor do him a wrong, Who whistles a bit as they journey along. ANONYMOUS tittle League Notes Little League President, Fred Meyer, has called a meeting of all officers, managers and anyone interested in helping with our Little League this year. The meeting will be held at the city hall on Thursday, March 15, at 8 p.m. At this meeting we will have the election of officers. Also we will try"*"to ~Set dates for registering and tryouts. We shall also discuss the continuation of the league for eight year olds. This was started two years ago and has been a tremendous success. This league uses the same field as the Little Leaguers. However, the boys are not eligible to play on a regular Little League team since the National Headquarters made the decision two years ago that eight year old boys generally are not mature enough to compete with older players. At that time McHenry's Little League decided to establish an eight year old league. The results have been gratifying. Watch for this column each week for more Little League news. The regional tournament is on, but the press will be rolling before we can get a report of McHenry's game with Crystal Lake. A radio sports announcer and newspaper reporters from towns outside our conference tell us McHenry has a great chance to win this tournament. We hope their crystal ball is not playing tricks. Newspapers seldom pay much attention to unsigned letters, but we are going to look into one received too late to give attention this week. The writer wants us to give a plug to the J.V. team. We abide by a conference request not to print standings and spend a lot of ink on J.V. games. However, we will give this a Ijttle more attention next week. Open Wk. They entered the "A" class competition of the junior corps and placed fourth. There were six other drum corps. First place went to the Royal Airs, second to Phantom Regiment of Rockford, arid third to the Morton Grove Cougars. The Viscounts will be on exhibition this coming Sunday at the McHenry high school during the Forester basketball tournament. WARRIORS LOSE FINAL SAME TO WILDC|T569-64 Scrappy Warriors Put On Late Press For Near Upset A 4tS) lanky, well-built basketball team from Libertyville came to McHenry last Friday night and sailed along to a comfortable lead over the Warriors until a fourth quarter score that left the visitors hanging on the ropes to,, protect a lead that eventually gave them a 69-64 victory. Libertyville's starting lineup featured plenty of size, the shorty of the crowd being 6' 1" tall. Controlling the ball and shooting both field goals and free throws on a high percentage basis, the Wildcats ran up a 22-10 lead in the first quarter. The Warriors showed spunk in the second quarter and outscored the visitors 21-17 to close the gap to 21-17 at half time. Then came that third Quarter and Libertyville forged ahead. Several boys came off thobench to do a good job as the game progressed. In the fourth period, the Warriors went into a full court press that upset the home crowd into a frenzy of excitement. The determined Warriors had a 23-13 advantage in this quarter and looked for a while like they might turn the trick. Fred Kusch led the scoring for McHenry with 19 points while Doug Reed turned in a sharp performance to lead the winners with 20. A glance at the box score will show numerous fouls and the game being won from the free throw line. Libertyville held a big edge in marksmanship from the free throw line. This was the final game of the season as play now moves into the regional tournament.
