# Thursday March 22. 1962 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Page Thirteen Preparedness Tips Of Value As Tornado Season Approaches The spring season of tornadoes and floods in the mid-west approaches,, and in anticipation, disaster preparedness is of prime concern in the 122 Red Cross chapters in Illinois, including McHehry county. While tornadoes occur throughout the year, the next « few months are considered the period of greatest danger. Last year they killed fifteen persons and injured 440 in the nation. They also destroyed or damaged over 10,000 dwellings. Since tornadoes can strike in any part of Illinois this year, the Red Cross and the Weather Bureau suggest several preparedness steps as a means of lessening loss of life, personal injury • and property, damage. The safest place is a storm cellar* cave or underground excavation with an air outlet. In open country, move at right angles to the tornado's path. They usually move ahead at about 25 to 40 miles per ^ hours. In towns, stay off the streets, preferably in a steel or otherwise reinforced building, but away from windows. In homes, the southwest corner of the basement usually offers greater safety. Open north and east windows to equalize pressure and, if time permits, turn off electrical pow^F and fuel lines. If there is no basement, lie down in the nearest ditch or depression. These suggestions will probably not be needed by residents of Edgebrook Heights, who learned, first hand, two and a half years ago how important it is to know whgit to do -- if there is time to do itr . . Age-Old Chore May Turn Into Heartwarming Experience Most of us find the one bright spot in spring house cleaning comes with finding items for which we no longer have a use, but which prove valuable to someone else. There are many individuals and many organizations worthy of assistance, but the giving many times proves such a heartwarming experience for the giver that he benefits the most. This week another volunteer, non-profit organization of this type came to our attention, called New Eyes for the Needy, Inc., located in Short Hills, New Jersey. They have been working for thirty years to improve the vision of the needy the world over. They have never solicited a penny-- only items which are no longer of use to others. They are looking for discarded eyeglasses, broken jewelry, false teeth with bits of gold, costume jewelry, etc. Unbroken plastic framed glasses are sorted, graded and sent to medical missions all over the world to improve the vision of people who do not have access to new glasses. Metal framed glasses, broken jewelry and precious metal scraps are sent to a refinery afrid the money realized buys new prescription glasses which are distributed everywhere. Whatever your favorite charity, spring housecleaning can take on a new interest just by the knowledge that vso many others may gain by it. News About Our Servicemen CROSSWORD • By A. C.
