1 Page Sixteen THE McsHENRY PLAINDEALER NON-COOPERATOR MISSES BENEFITS OF GRAIN PROGRAM The producer that does not cooperate in the 1962 Feed Grain program misses all of its benefits, Bert Bridges, chairman of the McHenry County ASC committee emphasized this week. He points out that the non-cooperator will not be eligible for price supports on corn and grain sorghum's in 1962. And this could be a pretty important factor considering the present abundance of feed grains, Mr. Bridges points out. Mr. Bridges also warns that it will be risky for a farmer to count on any increase in market prices of feed grains. As cooperating growers receive payments which represent grains from Commodity Credit Corp. stocks, this grain becomes available for market and farm use and will competc with other grain on the market, he explains. The non-cooperator gets only the market price, whatever it may be. Besides price supports, Ihc oooperator also gets a payment for each acre he diveris from corn-sorghum up to 40 per cent of his 1959-1960 base corra acreage. For producers wilh less than a 100-acre base, the amount that can be diverted may run over 40 per cent. The oooperator is assured a reasonable net income on his iiverted acres regardless of drouth, hail, excessive moisture or other crop damage, Mr. Bridges concludes. UNDER 21 A column for teen-agers By Dan Halligan Household Hints The Lenten season places added emphasis on eggs in family meals. H u g h Johnson, extension poultry sciencp specialist, and Mrs. June Myers, extension foods and nun-it ion specialist at the University' of Illinois, answer some common questions about egL;s. N If I want eggs of high quality, should • I buy the largest ones available? Not necessarily, since size does not determine quality. A large egg may lie AA, B or C quality, the same as a small ege. Top-quality eggs--grades AA and A--are best for poaching, frying and cooking in the shell, when appearance and delicate flavor are important. But grade B and C eggs have dozens of uses, such as scrambling. baking and combining with other foods. W e like double-yolked eggs. Why can't we get more of them? The physiologist hasn't figured this out yet. The same thing applies to human twins. Double-yolked eggs are most often laid by pullets coming into production, and they occur about once in every 500 lo 600 eggs produced. Triple-yolked eggs are laid at the rate of about once in every 5,000 to 6,000 eggs, according to some estimates. The few double-yolked eggs that get to market are sold in the jumbo and extra-large sizes. Are fertile eggs more nutritious than unfertile ones? No. Fertility has no connection with the nutritiousness of eggs. Are eggs with darker yolks more nutritious than those with lighter yolks? No. The nutritive content is the same for both dark and light yolks. Xanthophyll is the major substance causing yolks to have a particular shade of color, and it has no food value. Do green or dark yolks in hard-cooked eggs indicate poor quality? No. In most cases the color is due to the formation of ferrous sulphide during cooking. When the egg Is cooked for too long a time at too high a temperature, the iron in the yolk reacts with the sulphur in the white. Painters who are responsible for the white centerlines on highways say their toughest job is keeping the lines squarely in the center of the road, especially on curves. DEAR DAN: My girl's father runs the only bowling alley in town and everytime we go there on a date, he has to run over and start giving instructions. He hogs the whole evening and I'm getting fed up with it. I know he doesn't mean any harm but after all, when a guy only has about three hours with a girl, he doesn't want her father hanging around. Would it be all right to tell the girl how I feel and then maybe she can tell her Dad without hurting his feelings? •-- Bowler. DEAR BOWLER: I think it would be all right. When you break the news to your girl, don't criticize ner father or your bowling may be done stag in -the.--f_ulw*C~Tell her that her father is such a good bowler, he makes you nervous when he's trying to instruct and see what she has to say. DEAR DAN: Five of us girls want to know, if it would be all right to buy our teacher a birthday present together. We've talked to the other kids and they don't want to chip in so would it be all right to go ahead on our own? -- Five Sophs. DEAR SOPHS: The present given by only "five from a j class of 20, 30 or 40 would please your teacher but prove em- i barrassing too. Buy a nice card, no present, and sign it 'The 'Class." That way, you'll have remembered and the teacher won't be embarrassed. ; DEAR DAN: Ever since my boy friend and I started going steady two months ago, he's been a changed j>erson. I don't mean he's gotten fresh or anything like that but he has been insulting at times. He definitely takes me for granted, shows up late for dates, sometimes not at all and when he doesn't show up. he tells me (the next day he was busy. This has happened four times. He isn't nearly as neat as he used to be either. When we first started dating, he could be counted on to always look like a handsome movie star but lately it's been jeans and a sport jacket. Does it always happen this way when a girl and a boy go steady? This is my first experience at steady dating even though I'm nearly 17. -- Concerned. DEAR CONCERNED: Your boy friend has the attitude, "Well, she's mine and I can do as I please with her and to her." It goes without saying you two shouldn't be going steady. Perhaps if you tell him you want to break up or at the very least explain how you feel, he'll become that "handsome movie star" again. Most steadies, by the way, stay on the ball. DEAR DAN: How does a girl tell a boy she still likes him but wants to quit going steady during summer vacation and then start going steady again when school begins in the fall? My boy friend has a full-time summer job and I hate the thought of sitting home on a lot of the days when I could be out swimming with a mixed crowd and perhaps with a date. Is there a tactful way I can suggest this arrangement? -- Dora,. DEAR DORA: If there's a tactful way, I'm sure I don't know jt. You want everything your way to suit your convenience. You either want to go steady with this boy or you don't. After all, he has feelings tpo. DEAR DAN: My girl is a television bug and I'm getting sick of it. Take, for instance, our last date tWr) nights ago. I got to her house at 7:30 but she couldn't leave right then because a show was just coming on that she liked. Anyway, I had to twiddle my thumbs for an hour. We went to the movies and then we had to leave 30 minutes early so I could get her home ort time. This has happened before and two or three times she's become so interested in television, we don't even go out when we have plans for the evening. She'll suggest that we stay home and watch television. I'm fed up with this deal and if I don't get treated better, I'm getting out. Can you blame me? -- No TV Fan. DEAR NO TV FAN: The blame rests with your girl. If you two have a house date plan, fine, but when you actually plan a trip to the movies or to the bowling alley, that's different. Give her a choice, either--l^ievision or you. There's more than a good chance television «all be the winner but that's okay too. Along about summer when all the shows are being rehashed, the girl may start wishing she hadn't been so hasty. DEAR DAN: Give us your opinion, please. Is a girl Considered too forward if she kisses a boy on their fourth date or suggests a goodnight kiss when she knows the boy is dying to kiss her but is just too shy to do it? -- The Misses. DEAR MISSES: I would say a girl is too forward for my taste if she has to resort to such tactics. This may never happen but the "shy" boy could actually be Mr. 'Wolf simply playing "hard to get" and if a girl makes a kiss suggestion, he might think the sky's the limit. In addition, the cholesterol- conscious should know that the oils present in fish are largely of the unsaturated kind which are believed to' prevent or lessen the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood. (Cholesterol deposits in the walls of blood vessels are responsible for the condition known as "hardening of the arteries"). With most everyone interested in lowcalorie foods these days, the following suggestions from the National Fisheries Institute are especially welcome: LOW-CALORIE FISH BROIL Select lean fish fillets cut thin lengthwise. To save calories, tlie broiler pan need not be greased; the moisture from the fish will prevent sticking. Preheat the pan and arrange fish in the hot pan. Cover with a low-calorie topping and broil 2 to 3 inches from thq source of heat--4 minutes if fish is thin; 8 minutes, turning once, if fish is thicker than flounder, for example.
