Chances are you don't, and taking them without medical sanction may risk your health, says Nyla Gorham, extension foods and nutrition specialist. Self-dosage with food supplement preparations may delay treatment, for conditions that require a doctor's attention, and the delay may cause serious trouble. Taking food supplements when you are already getting enough nutrients may result in just as serious consequences' as get tint; too few nutrients. Food supplements are a form of nutrition quackery. The Food and Drug Administration reports that nutrition quackery is the most widespread and expensive type of promotional charlatanism in the U. S. today. It "cons" the public out ol an estimated half billion dollars a year. You can avoid being "taken" by nutrition quacks by learning to judge the reliability of the claims of products. Here are some guides: Study statem e n t s on or about products to see if they mean what they say. For exaniple. a product may be labeled a high-protein -food. What is a high-protein food-- high in relation to what? Do yod need extra protein? Beware of products that claim to contain more of a nutrient than any other food supplies. Be leery of products that offer unrealistic rewards. For example, a product may promise to take care of problems that may really stem from too little sleep, too many activit ies or worry about work or home life. Or advertisements may call the product a perfect food. Statements that food alone cannot provide you with all the nutrients you need Is mother false claim. Ask yourself how much the product costs in comparison with good, nutritious meals. If you can get the nutrients you need for eight or ten dollars a week per adult, is it necessary to add the cost of a food supplement ? Miss Gorham "points out that no one food or nutrient is essential to health. Some sixty nutrients are. And the best source of them is a good diet of a variety of foods. Build a -;ood diet on a framework of basic foods - vegetables, fruits, milk, meat, bread and cereals. Approximately 150 persons assembled last Saturday evening at the American Legion home to celebrate the post's forty-third birthday anniversary. Appropriately, since it was St. Patrick's Day, a corned beef and cabbage supper was served.
