April 9, in the McHenrv high school gymnasium for the purpose of reeistering for classes r.ext fall. All eighth grade pupils in the district who plan to attend the local school in September, with their parents, are asked to report to the gym between the hours of 7 and 8:30. Mrs. John Bolger of the high school faculty is in charge of the program, which began with special testing of all eighth crraders. Results of these tests have been used in helping to make recommendations for the j students in regard to the study of Latin and algebra their freshman year. The pre-testing wis started several years ago. when the enrollment began to grow rapidly. In the intervening years it has assisted immeasurably in guiding young people to courses for which they are best suited.V Other Opportunities Offered In addition to registering for a regular course of study, incoming freshmen will also have an opportunity to speak with coaches and teachers of other extra-curricular subjects and irfquire concerning art, music, etc. Letters have been sent to parents of eighth graders, stating the recommendations for subjects. Attractive plans have been submitted for the building and much needed parking area on the grounds. Ordinance AffeetR Signs McHenry's new zoning ordinance will no longer permit signs extending over the sidewalks. As recommended in the new plan, signs must be placed against the buildings. One exception provides that in cases where buildings are1 set back from the lot line, signs will be allowed on posts set at least 25 feet from the front lot line. Prov ision is also made for controlling height of canopies and small directional business identification signs. Now that the Council is proudly settled in a new meeting room, the Superintendent of Public Works has been aut horized to make improvements in the police department office and front room of the city hall. C Of C Plans Dinner Dance At the Tuesday noon meeting of the Chamber of Commerce board, plans were continued for the dinner dance the organization is sponsoring, to be held April 24 at 7 o'clock at the V.F.W. clubhouse. It is open to the public, and tickets will go on sale the end of this week by members of the board or at the C of C office, which may be reached by calling Evergreen 5-4300. Only a limited number will be available, so interested persons are urged to purchase them as soon as possible. Some discussion took place on the possibility of forming a retail committee.
