Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, May 10. 1962- SO I HEAR... Wo drove down to the ball diamond Sunday afternoon and were surprised to see the crowd that turned out for the opening game of the county league season. The Shamrocks beat Harvard 6-0. as Roger Benson threw strikes all day. Cooperation between the "city and the Shamrock players has resulted in a big improvement in the diamond. The players pul in a grass infield and should be ready to whip the dust storm problems of other years. The city hauled many yards of dirt to level the rolling oiit field. Next Sunday the Shamrocks travel to Richmond. We hope to be able to print a schedule for you this" week of the first round. Lloyd Freund and his team are all set for the invasion of Dundee next Sunday in the opening game at Johnsburg. It looks from where we sit that the Tigers will be a hustling. hard-hitting team. The boys would like to see a real old time crowd gather 'round for the opening game. Charlie Hiller did just dandy in his recent visit to Wrigley Field. His batting average boosted and his defensive play was real snappy. Looks like Charlie has arrived. Marge Adams predicted we would hear a real fine talk at the Rotary Sports banquet when she learned the speaker was Professor George Walter of Lawrence college. He was the greatest blend of brawn and brains we have seen. Plenty of fire and a rare sense of humor in the professor. I'd rather be a has-been Than a might-have-been by far, For a might-have-been has never been, But a has-been was an are. The star under which you were born is not as important as the color of the light when you cross the street. A man may look at his wife without seeing her -- a woman can see thru her husband without looking at him. Anonymous Some of these commercials on TV and radio slay us, so perhaps the following pleased us a bit:- The install ment collector called on the customer. "I'm sorry to see, Mr. Jones," he said, "That you are three payments in arrears on the piano you purchased some time ago." "I know." "Didn't it give you cause for concern?" * "Oh, no--I remember tne c o m p a n y ' s a d v e r t i s e m e n l : "Pay as vou play." . "But what has that to do with it?" "Well, I'm a lousy player." Zbivot of team play are listed below with their opponents and tee times: 8:37 - A. Reike and Justen 75, vs Funk and Vaupell, 65. 8 : 4 4 - - R e i h a n s p e r g e r a n d Merley, 69 vs Buss and Strassheim, 60. 8:51 -- M. Johnson and Phelan, 55 vs O'Connell and M. Weselius and Antonson -- Bye A pat on the back to all the gals who shoved up for play in sphe of the threat of rain and that cold, cold wind. It was a tough fight! Hope you all enjoyed the day. Don't forget, those of you who ran second, off the back nine Tuesday, and before or after the tournament players. Motto for the day "Come on, ball, hit the bridge! Besides the band, soloists will be featured, with Bill Andrews acting as master of ceremonies. Shamrocks Win 6-0 Game From Harvard Nihe The McHenry Shamrocks, behind the three-hit pitching of Roger Benson, topped Harvard 6-0 here last Sunday. He struck out 13 and walked none. Dave Klapperich, fresh from the Florida sunshine, looked real good at the plate with two doubles besides playing a great game at short. Gene Freund played his usual heads-up game, and Tom McAuliffe did an excellent job . behind the plate, besides hitting a triple in the eighth inning. It looked good to see such a fine crowd out for the game. Next Sunday the Shamrocks travel to Richmond. McHenry (6) AB R H Bujak, 2b 3 2 0 Freund, 3b 4 2 1 Klapperich, ss 4 1 2 R. Leonard, a 160-pound senior, will concentrate on the halfmile run at the Prospect district this Saturday. Leonard ran a 1:59.2 half-mile last Saturday in finishing second at the strong Mooseheart Relays --his best time and well under the 2:01.7 he compiled a year ago to capture the McHenry County title.
