McHENRY COUNTY ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS By: John E. Looze Attorney for Petitioners: Carroll & Leali ?29 Lake Avenue Woodstock, Illinois Telephone: 338-3100 (Pub. May 17. 1962) ering with a thick paste of laundry starch. After this has dried, sponge it off with per? oxide, iron the article, and put into the sun for a few hours. Q.'What can I* do i f I need an extra-large piece of wax paper and have only a few smaller pieces? A. You can seal these pieces together with a hot iron. Q. How can I, through my decorating, give a very small room the illusion of greater size? ^ -v A. Try wallpapering three walls of this room in a plain, modest pattern, and the fourth wall in a predominant, bold pattern. Q. How pan I discourage moths and silverfisfy, in my carpets? A. These pests have a hearty dislike for printer's ink, and you can capitalize on this by sheading layers of newspapers under your carpets. Put the papers between the carpet and the pad, if you, have one -- if not, use a heavy layer of newspapers and it will serve as a cushion, too. ( • Q. How can 1 bring out the full flavor of raisins and dates? A. Try soaking them in a little boiling water for about five minutes. Two tablespoons of "boiling water for each halfcup of fruit will be satisfactory ow can I soften up a ftiffeneri chamois? A. By soaking it in warm water to which a spoonful of olive oil has been added. Your chamois will emerge as soft and clean as when new. Q. How can I safely test for a leaking gas connection in my home? ' A. Never, of, course, test with a lighted match! The results could be disastrous! Instead, make a strong solution of soap and water, of glycerin and water -- such as children use foi blowing bubbles. Brush this over the suspected connection and, if there really is a leak, the gas will blow some bubbles for you. Q. How can I facilitate the job of ripping out a long seam in a dress I am working on? A. You can make, this job much easier if* you hold the material under the pressure foot of your sewing machine, making the" pressure foot serve as a "third hand." Q. How can I repair holes or short tears in canvas? A. By using some rubbercement to apply your' patching material. Weight tl$ patch for seveial hours to insure its staying in place. Q. Some of my highly-polished furniture has acquired "bloom," that ugly gray discloration. How can I cope with this? ' A. This often disappears when wiped with a soft cloth wrung out of warm ^vater containing a little vinegar (one tablespoon of vinegar to 1 a quart of water). Wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth. Also, an application of liquid wa$ often accomplishes the same result. Q. How can I stimulate the growth of my eyebrows? A. Apply warm olive oil or petroleum jelly to the Eyebrows every night before retiring. Or, dip the fingertips into pure lanolin,, and massage the brows every night. Q. HOw can I keep the colors in cottons from running when laundering? A. Stir into the first suds in which they are to be washed, one tablespoon ofblack pepper, or three tablespoons* of turpentine. Q. How can I take away that faded and worn appearance at the seams of a carpet? A. Try using paint, or soft crayons of the same shades as In the rug, and touching up the worn places with these. One can visit a lot of the world without leaving Indiana, for example: Paris, Athens, Rcme, Crete, Sardinia, Peru, Chile, Berlin, Troy, Ldndon, China, Bethlehem, Ninevah, Milan, Trafalgar, Leipzig, Versailles, Edinburg, Pekin, and Siberia.
