P age Four THE M IcBSm LK AN Y PLAINDEALER Thursday, May 17, 1962 SO I HEAR... r Yeah. We heard it from all sides. The Cubs won a doubleheader from the Phils on Sunday, then beat our White Sox 2 to 1 on Monday. Ed Doyle came out from behind the bushes to hail us after! he Sunday victories. When we pulled in our drive Tuesday evening he sent his son "Butch" on the run to ask us how the Cubs came out on Monday night. We brought "Butch" a White Sox cap" one time, but tSld him he didn't have to wear it when his Dad-1 was on the verge of sending the boy to reform school if he did such a terrible thing as join the Sqx ranks. We didnU begrudge the Cubs that double victory Sunday, but did enjoy seeing Billy Klaus bat that ball around.^ Go ahead and have your fun, boysv Next year we . are going to "put in our first team. John Knox reports that wet grounds Caijsed the game to be called at Richmond last Sunday. The Shamrocks travel to Dundee next Sunday. The Johnsburg Tigers beat Dundee last week and have an open date next Sunday. County League baseball needs a lot more support than it has been getting in the way 'of crowds. Some think it will take a lighted field to bring the league back to the lofty standing it once enjoyed: The general opinion is that Dundee has a pretty fair ball team that will get tougher as the season moves along. SUDDEN THOUGHTS Just thinking of days / gone by when our mother and father sat on the back porfch after a rain and watched us young'uns run b ar-e^f o o t thi'ough the soft, wet grass like y.oung colts. While our dad steamed up the old pipe, our mother sat there wishing she could join us. John Dreymiller (The ~Peo~ pie's Choice) is back in circulation again after another stay in the hospital. The old boy must have nine lives. Guess the Lord figures we need the likes o* John on this earth. " Plans for the Marian Central sports banquet next Sunday evening are rolling along and spirit is gaining momentum as the date draws nigh. William Gleason, Chicago American sports writer and a pal of Nick Etten, will be the speaker of the evening. Fred Meyer will be the, M.C. so you may be sure there will be life in the party. Daily Pinups Hope springs not from what you've done, but from the work you've just begun. Life is much like A game of cards, you must play your best with the hand that is dealt you. Just got word that Paul Morenz pitched his second nobit game of the season as McHenry High beat Grayslake 11- 0 in the district tournament. Nice going, Paul. "Youngsters, take a look and see Whfi.t, we otttsters call a "tree" . See the branches, leaves and "so on'5? That's what money doesn't grow on. Since there are so many varieties of mistakes to make, why make the same one twice? The following came in at pi'ess time with a clipping "Cubs Beat Sox, 2-1:" "Don't be stubborn Mr. Walsh, --say something nice about the Cubs in your column this week." Why didn't you sign your name? Something nice, eh? As the coaches say at high school athletic banquets, "They are a fine bunch of boys, but they don't win many games." Aside from that I can only go to that old refrain, "What Can I Say Dear After I Say I'm Sorry?" And you can add "Yeah, McHENRY THEATRE 11204 N. Gr. Ph. EV 5-01441 THURS., FRI. & SAT. Last Sunday they greeted arid "heated" the Dundee nine 6 to 1 • on the Johnsburg diamond. Ed Mack allowed only 5 hits and 4 bases on balls while striking out 11 battels. All of the hits allowed were singles. The Tigers had a flock of runners on base with 9 hits and 11 bases on balls, but the Dundee infield came up with four double plays to cut down the scoring. Warrriors Split In Crucial Twin Bill With Barrington With the hope of Dundee either splitting or losing both games of their doubleheader, McHenry travelled to Barrington on May 5 to see what they could do about winning two games and trying to get the conference lead back. They neitner won a doubleheader or took back the lead. McHenry not only split the two games, but also got one more game away from the leader, Dundee, who took both games of their doubleheader. In the first garrre the Broncos scored one in the third on an error, a wild pitch, a passed ball, -a-nd a single. The Warriors fought back with a run in the sixth on a double and a single. In the seventh, with the score tied and the threat of rain, McHenry got two runs on an errcr and a towering home run by Bill DeCicco. In the bottom of the seventh with defeat staring thefti in the face, Barrington loaded the bases after two were out. The next • batter walked, forcing in the runner from third. Now, a hit would win the game. But, it wasn't their game as the nextbatter flew out. Due to an unexpectedly largft registration, . we have adder another division to our Little League. This ivill be called the Miniature League, and they will Play every Saturday. This league is for the younger boys. Ten, eleven, and | twelve year olds are not eligi- ; ble to play with this group. It was necessary to form I this miniature league so as to ' continue with -the McHenry Little League policy of giving every boy who registers a chance to pla^.on a team. In many other Little Leagues, in oth^r towns, only the older boys or those Aith the most ability are selected to play. The other boys are dropped and must wait and hope for a chance in future years. Here in McHenry we feel that every boy should have the feeling that he "Belongs" and we have made every effort to accommodate the boys. Once in a while parents, feel that their boys should be in a faster league. While this is seldom true, we don't feel this is too important. The important thing is that every boy has a chance to play and to prove his ability. Only then can we recognize that ability and give the boy a chance to move up. against one loss. Jopp got the 1oj|l for the Broncos. r&|te'as Barrington all the way in the second game as they shut out the Warriors 4- 0. The Broncos scored two runs in each of the third and sixth innings. The choice#1 will be made by the athletes who take part in the respective sports. Cheerleaders for thie school year will also be honored as will the men who coach these sports: Ed Osada, baseball; Steve Zoll, track; and Joe Gubbiris, golf and basketball. Tom Parsley, athletic director, is assisting ^ Walter Parker, general chairman with the arrangements. Varsity cheerleaders include Mickey Ganshirt, Jane Nye, Sharon Riley, Louise Tonyan, Pat O'Leary, Pat Von Harz and Diane McMahon. Fred Meyer, McHenry, an active member in the Fathers Club, will ser^e as master of ceremonies for the affair. The public is invited to attend, and of course parents of the students have special invitations, Meyer said. Gleason To Speak Featured speaker will be William Gleason, Chicago's American sports writer. Parsley noted that many Chicago teams have been flopping consistently so that Gleason may spend most of the questionand- answer period trying to explain the demise of the Black Hawks and Cubs and the slow start of the White Sox. Entry of Frank Lane in Chicago professional basketball should be another topic for Gleason. Committee members are located throughout McHenry county, Parker said, and tickets. also will be available at the door. Advance sales will enable the committee to gauge the amount of food to prepare, he suggested. The 1962 Lake County boating season. will have a- spec- 4 tacular send off with the first running, of the Lake County Championship Regatta on Sunday May 20. Regatta officials have set 12:00 noon as the official starting time for the first heat of powerboats. The Chain O'Lakes Boat Club of , Fox Lake is sponsoring " the/ event to be held one mile northeast of Grayslake at Third Lake Park. The event is sane- ' tioned by the American Povyer Boat Association of Detroit. Edward Sulljvan of Johnsburg, commodore of the boat club and a long time APBA member and former driver, will referee the event. Excellent facilities and good water for racing indicate one of the most successful regattas in recent years. ^ Miss Illinois, Jackie Binger of Winthrop Harbor, will be jpresent to award trophys to the winners after the final heat.
