Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, June 7, 1962 / SO I HEAR... Bet there was some fun around Ray Miller's tavern Sunday night after the Richmond ball team beat Johnsburg. ^ Richie Miller, one of the b e s t c o m p e t i t o r s we h a v e watched in the county league, did the pitching for Richmond and turned the trick'. Somehow, a game between those two teams is always anybody's same no' matter what the odds may be. Took a trip out to Dubuque, low a on Memorial Day to pick up our daughter as the school year ended. And that was a day to remember! Fathers arid mothers pulled up in great numbers to load all those trunks, suitcases, boxes, dresses, coats, tennis racquets, typewriters and what have you. Everything but bird cagcs. The car ahead of us in line was from Milwaukee. Mom and Dad took the trip and thought it would be nice to bring Grandpa. The last we saw, Grandpa was standing on the sidewalk smoking his pipe and wondering. The question was where to put Grandpa on the way home. Mother took charge while Dad just stood t h e r e s p u t t e r i n g s o m e t h i n g about those girls never having a thing to wear. We loaded every inch of the car and arrived home safely. Next fall we will consider a trailer, truck -- or maybe call in the Salvation Army. Coach Jim Doran will conduct basketball classes again this year, starting Monday, June 18 in St. Mary's gym. The individual instructions last summer brought about noticeable results in some of the boys. These classes are for all boys in the area, regardless of which school they attend. Coach Doran's impressive record "with grade school boys seems to rate him as the logical man for th.e job. ' A very good report on Little League appears on this page. Looks to us like a few agood men are doing a great job of handling a large group of boys. The Martin Conway family has had just too much tough luck of late. First Mrs. Howard Cairns, then Earl "Marty" had to make quick trips to hospitails. Both .are what we call "Good Eggs", popular and loved by all. We hope they boujice back fast. Paul Morenz pitched the next three innings and Gene Freund finished up with three up and three down in the eighth. Gary Tinder was the big gun for McHenry with a homer, double and single. Richmond pr jvea to be too strong for the johnsburg Tigers Sunday as they dealt the Tigers their first loss of the season and first in county loop play. The game was a nip and tuck battle until Richmond shelled Tiger pitcher Ed Mack for six runs in the fifth inning. As the game progressed this proved to be enough as Johnsburg scored only five runs. Richmond got their other two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Johnsburg scored their rims in the fifth, sixth and seventh getting three in the sixth. Richy Miller Was the winning pitcher giving up only five hits, four of them to Harry May, including a home run in the seventh. Richy struck out ten while walking four. Bilks DeCicco relieved Mack and did a fine job giving up ,-oniyone earned run and striking out three while, walking one. Mack struck out .seven in five innings while walking only two. Next Sunday Johnsburg will travel to Dundee where they hope a large crowd will be on hand to see them defend the county league championship, 'ot 2wr Whaddaya know. DECICCO ALLOWS 3 HITS AS TIGERS BEAT HARVARD 6-1 The Johnsburg Tigers, behind the three hit pitching of Bill DeCicco and Ted Schaefer, set down Harvard Sunday before a large home crowd. The three hits were well scattered and neither pitcher was in trouble, except for the fourth inning when DeCicco hit the first batter atad the next hitter came up with a single. The next batter hit a line drive just to the right of second base but Lloyd Freund made a spectacular catch and threw to Jack Schaefer covering second who in turn threw to Wally Frett at first to make the almost impossible triple play. *>• This crowd pleasing play got the Tigers out of the inning without a run. Harvard's only run came in the eighth off Ted Schaefer when a man reached third and scored on an attempt to pick off a man stealing second. Johnsburg got two runs in the first, two in the second and two in the fifth which proved to be enough to take the Harvard nine and the County League lead. DeCicco was the winner striking out nine and walking only one. Gibbs was the loser striking out four, walking three. The good crowds on hand show the increasing interest in the county league. Get out and see your home town play.
