Pag* Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER WtdUh. SO I HEAR... Short week, short and late column. We saved this space to be sure to get in the results of the selection of McHenry County League All-Stars, the voting having taken place on Monday night. We told John Knox the list had to be in our hands real early so he rapped on our door just after sun-up on Tuesday. Here are the stars: IB -- Wayne Wright (Dundee); 2B -- Bill Stilling (Richmond i; SS -- Dave Klapperich (McHenry); 3B -- Gene Freund (McHenry); C -- Tom Huemann (Johnsburg); LF -- Larry Borucki (Dundee); CF -- Dick Hiller (Johnsburg) • RF -- G. Tinder (McHenry); P -- Don Plauck (Dundee). Other players selected on the squad are: Ron Miller ahd Rich Miller of Richmond, Rich Hopp and Thelander of Dundee, Payl Morenz and Roger Benson of McHenry, Ed Sankey of Harvard. Since the Stars will be playing the Johnsburg Tigers, Tom Huemann and Dick Hiller will be in the Tiger lineup. So -- next Sunday at 1:45 the players will be introduced and trophies awarded. The game will be played at Johnsburg. Let's be there. You will see the best of the league in action. County League baseball needs a boost. Let's be boosters. H. F. Gene Freund Hits Two Doubles And Single For 5 Runs The Shamrocks beat Richmond in a league game Sunday 11-3. It was Roger Benson all the way for McHenry as he allowed only seven hits and two walks. Gene Freund was the big gun with the bat, with two doubles and a single, good for five RBI's. The whole team played a McHenry by John Varese The President's Tournament is under way, and the usual amount of gladness was prevalent in the club house by the winners of the first round. It might seem a bit strange but the catch reports still do not equal those of the big ones that got away. A series of free eight-week courses in safe boating will be offered to all Chicago-area residents (in Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Cook and Will counties in Illinois) by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The first course will be held at the Pistakee Lake Marina, Fox Lake, beginning July 17 and continuing every Tuesday through Sept. 4. Similar programs will also be conducted in the area this fall and winter. All instruction during the courses will be given by certified Coast Guard auxiliary personnel, with assistance by outside specialists in various elements of boating. Coast Guard certificates will lie awarded to all who successfully complete the course. We think all will agree that these courses should be of great benefit to many individuals if they would just take time to attend. Much has been done in the past few years to make boating safer and more enjoyable on our waterways, but by the same token, there is much to be desired. A friend of ours mentioned recently "It's safer to ride a bicycle on the Tri-State Toll way then it is to take a small boat on the Fox River on a weekend. fifth inning when two errors gave Richmond all three of their runs, all unearned. The old man himself, Ray Miller, even got into the act. In the ninth inning he came in as a pinch hitter and lined a single between first and second. Then he tried to steal second and would have made it only he slid on his stomach and bounced over the bag and was tagged out on the overslide. Ray blames the loss on his daughter's wedding reception the night before. The Shamrocks entertain Dundee on the Fourth of July, and next Sunday hope to be well represented in the All- Star game at Johnsburg. SHAM-O-GRAM: Dave Klapperich is the leading hitter on the team, of the regulars, with a .350 batting average, followed closely by Jim Peterson with .341. Gene Freund leads in RBI's with 12, and Klapperich is second with 10. SCHOOL REGISTRATION Young people planning to a t t e n d the McHenry high school next fall and who have not yet registered are asked to do so any week day this month. The office is open from 8 a.m.. to 4 p.m. PISTAKEE COUNTRY CLUB The latest swing of the Twilight League members around Pistakee Country Club's sporty "nine" resulted in this line-up of the first four teams in the ten-team league: Bob Bachecki's swingers retained first place. Wally Golofit's team holds second place, and Ed Underwood's "T" Birds are third. The fourth slot is held down by A1 Thelen's group. Carl Westin's 33 remains unchallenged for low gross honors and John Hodge holds low net laurels with a 27. More than 40 Waukeganites took part in a day of fun at Pistakee during the annual outing of the Korus Club. After a family-style dinner, golf prizes were awarded to Dick Kopp for low gross (39) and to John Long and Ann Wegrzyn who tallied a 36 as a two-ball foursome. IT PATS TO ADVERTISE tut/% hanger putts would have dropped or if the ball would have stayed on its intended course instead of squirting off in another direction, we always wish our opponents the best of luck in the next round. Ed Buss would like to have had 3 or 4 of these lip hangers drop for him last Saiurday because as it was he came in with 68 shots which is mighty fine goif anyway you hit the ball. I understand that he won a few passes to the theatre with that game too. Our 70 shooters for Sunday were: Ed. Buss, 74; P. Overton, 74; A. Jackson, 74; G. Kinsala, 74; J. Busscher, 76; E. PONY LEAGUE Sunday evening found Gene Frost's Giants with a comfortaway while Art Jackson's Sox able three-game lead tucked and Don Wilkinson's Cards battle it out for second place. Ken Frost, with the help of great defensive playing by Pierson, Hester and John Myer, pitched the Giants' sixth win of the season 12 to 9. In the second game, pitcher Dick Soda took bows for picking three Braves off first base. This, plus a manager's biggest headache -- errors -- will provide food for thought while the Braves are figuring out ways to climb out of the cellar after losing to the Sox 10 to 2. The Braves got off to a bad start in Tuesday's game when Pierson, Cusaek, arvl Meyer banged base hits off Tim Freund, backed up by a two-bagger by Piatt to chalk up 4 runs, 4 hits in the first inning. Back-to-back homers by Jim Frost and Wijas for the Giants in the 6th were canceled out by Parks and Greenley, back-to-back, in the 7th; Tim Freund was chalked with the loss to Rick Piatt, 7 to 5. Thursday evening the Cards edged the Sox out 13 to 8. Home runs were the order of the day -- Adams, Oeffling, Smith and Herman for the Cards, and Pitzen for the Sox. Denny Jackson's two-base hit and Dave Schaefer's single at the start of the game put the Cards on their toes right away. June 26 -- Cardinals 8, Eagles 5. June 27 -- Orioles 6, Owls 5, Mark Wegener of the Owls made a great catch in center field. Joe Hanley came back with a spectacular catch at shortstop for the Orioles. Den nis Bruhn pitched the whole game and scored the winning run for the Orioles. June 28 -- Bluebirds 13, Eagles 6. Bluebirds continue their fast pace and are pulling away from the rest of the teams with only five games left to play. June 29 -- Owls 8, Falcons July 1 -- Eagles 13 Orioles 11. This game gave the spectators a lot of action throughput the whole game. We would like to remind the parents cf all little leaue baseall players that their support at the games, financially, is essential if we are to continue to afford these boys the wonderful opportunity of playing baseball in McHenry. The collections taken up at each ;ame are used immediately to pay the association umpires and lately we haven't been meeting our expenses. Please make a note in your date book that McHenry Little League is going to have a dance this year on Aug. 4, at the V.F.W.. clubhouse. We will give you additional informat ion in the weeks to come. Everyone had such a good time at our last dance that we hope you'll all be able to attend again this year. Needless to say, the money will be used for all the new equipmsM the teams are s p o r t i n g t h i s j e a r as well as equipping two new teams in the miniature league. Remember the date . . AUG. 4! Minors GSmes June 25 -- Falcons 22, Orioles 5. June 26 -- Cardinals 7, Eagles 5. June 27 -- Orioles 18, Owls 14. June 28 -- Bluebirds 15, Eagles 1. June 29 -- Falcons 13, Owls 13. Tie This is the second time these teams have met each other and wound up in a tie on both occasions. July 1 -- Orioles 12, Eagles 3. The race for first place in the Minor League is close befl tween the Cardinals, Blue* birds and Falcons. Due to one rain out game, one game that has to be replayed and several tie games it is very difficult !o determine just which team is in first place. The Cardinals do have 7 wins and 1 loss on record although they have rained out game and a gami to be replayed, which couldt affect their standing. Falcons have two tie games and the Bluebirds have one tie game. Every game is played in the Minors, it seems to juggle the teams around as far as the standings is concerned, which makes it a very interesting league this year and the competition is very keen. WANTED. FATH ERS, FATHERS AND MORE FATHERS!!! We need a lot of help over at the Little League diamond right now. There are benches lo repair and paint. Fences to !)e mended. Grass to be mowed. Diamond needs work. Papers need to be picked up and the whole area cleaned up. Please devote Saturday or Sunday morning to the Little League park. Call Lenny Blake at 385-5116 and tell him what you can take care of and when. NOW!- It certainly doesn't seem fair that a man who volunteers to take a team, have practices three nights a week and play games the other three nights, has to go over there on Saturdays and Sundays and mow grass, rake, paint or pick up papers so that the parents ran come over to the park and enjoy the weather and the game and take it for granted that some magic superman is taking care of all the maintenance work. Ted gave up 3 hits and walked no one as he pitched the first shutout game of the year for the Legion team. Lloyd Smith sacrificed Ted in from third in the second inning for our first run. Tim singled to open tiv? fourth inning,- advanced .to second, and scored from second on Vern Peterson's single to right center field. Vern singled sharply between the shortstop and third basemen in the sixth. This was the second hit and only the third given up by two Crystal Lake pitchers. Sexton was the starting and losing pitcher for Crystal Lake although he pitched a good game. At the end of the first round the record of our Legion team stands at four wins and three defeats. Our team is a strong contender for first place as we begin the second round of competition. AH R H Hiller 3 0 0 Himpelman . . 2 0 0 Meyer 1 0 0 Farr 2 1 1 Freund 2 0 1 B. Special signs and new street name markers are the heart cf a coordinated traffic control program that is making motoring a pleasure instead of a chore in the Washington metropolis.
