Page Four THE McHEttftY PLAINDEALER Thursday, July 12. 1962 WtdUh. SO I HEAR... We saw quite a ball game Sunday as the Johnsburg Tigers beat the All-Stars of the county league 2 to 0. ^ Ed Mack was in top form as he went the distance and looked like he could keep throwing 'til sundown. His pitching motion was smooth as he and catcher Tom Huemann worked a neat game. Tom Oeffling had-.Jhe big blow of the game as he lost the ball in the centerfield- \veeds, then legged it around for a home run. Lloyd Freund had 3 hits and showed that he is still a Tiger in pouncing on ground balls. Dick Hiller robbed Gene Freund with the catch of the day, a la Willie Mays. It was a good ball game. Just too much Mack for the All-Stars. Now it's about time for the American League All-Stars to get down to business. We'd like to get those National League fans off our back. This can't go on! Little League Notes The Little League managers met and selected the All Star team to represent McHenry in the National Little League Tournament to be held in McHenry next week. The managers, almost without exception. picked the players named most frequently by, the boys themselves in an earlier poll. Vale, being a busy Pro, does not get out as often as he should to keep his fine game tuned up; so while he has to play scratch, everyone uses their full handicap, and this makes it kind of rough. Bob Beckenbaugh could have taken on Mr. Palmer Wednesday. Bob shoots to a 15 handicap, and he shot an 81 which gave him a low net of 66. He sure made the other three fellows in his foursome moan -- namely G. Sayler, E. Seepe and yours truly. He beat us scratch! An item in the news box says that Dr. Don Sturm toured the course Friday in 38-41 for a 79. This is quite a tremendous round of golf when you consider that Dr. Sturm shoots to a 15 handicap also! This sure makes me glad I'm in Class A. Our .apologies to Matt Hoffman for the omission of his name as the winner of his match against R. Weyland in the first round of the President's Tournament in Class B. Apparently it didn't do Matt much harm because he won his second round too. I guess those early morning rounds are beginning to pay off, Matt. Mark Wegener's homer gave the Owls a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals but the Redbirds bounced back to tie the score as Denny Hamil's hit scored Frank Harrison with the tying run. Mike AndersoTr and Gene Hester pitched scoreless ball in relief through three extra innings before. John Anderson's hit scored Bud Stilling to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win in 10 innings. Great defensive plays by Frank Cuda and C. J. Ludford kept the Cardinals from winning earlier. Manager Otto Larson's Owls have lost five games and all by the margin of one run. The Orioles won a double header from the Cardinals 5- 4 and 17-16 with one game being the continuation of a tie game. The Eagles and the Falcons split two games with the Eagles winning 4-1 and the Falcons 11-9. Alan Phalin homered as the Eagles nipped the Cardinals 10-8. PONY LEAGUE Sunday's Pony League baseball fans were pleasantly aroused from a doldrum practice session as the ever-winning Giants trounced the Braves deeper in the cellar 13 to 8, to be treated to the most thrilling battle of the season in the second game of the day between the Cards and Sox. The game went into extra innings with a tie score of 7 to 7, both Jim Meyers' and Dick Soda's pitching time expiring; Paul Wilkinson went in for the Cards and Bob Schaefer hurled for the Sox, for no runs, no hits in the 8th; Wilkinson's two-base hit at the beginning of the 9th made Schaeffer suffer, but the Sox retaliated in the inning when Pitzen smacked a homer to again tie the score 8 to 8. Beautiful pitching by Bob Schaeffer in the 10th, counteracted by flawless defense by Card 2nd baseman Newenr oorp in the bottom of the inning held the tie .score. An umpire's decision on interference in the 11th brought some tense moments for the crowd, managers, and players. Schaeffer's worries mounted as Meyers, Adams and Frfeund got hits, then Oeffling cleaned off the bases with a grand slam homer backed up with a two-base hit by Jim Meyers that got around to bring the score Cards 16, Sox 8. Soda's two-base hit on the first pitch and Pitzen's base hit on the next brought back that necessary spark of hope to the Sox at the bottom of the 11th. Some of the Cards' luck had rubbed off, and Soda lifted the ball out Of the field his second time at bat in the inning, just in time to tie the score again. The game was called on account of warkness, and will be played off at a later date, to be announced. This is a game to watch for. The Sox used two pitchers, the Cards hurled a total of 4 to try to come up with a winner. It will be interesting to see just who the victor will be.
