Just decided this week to take one day before the summer melts into the fall and go around visiting good friends whom we think of often but seldom see. The pace of modern, living is too fast for the good' old fashioned way of calling on our friends. Somehow, we always find time to call when a friend dies. That's different! Was a time when we thought a trip to Wisconsin Dells was great. Nowadays people take off for Europe with less fan fare. So, One of these mornings we are not going to report for work. That will be the day to record in our private history book as "The Walshes Go ACallih". Not long ago we heard groups discussing the amount of good work Tom Bolger has done for Little League this year. So. when Tom called us this week to ask for a plug for the Little League dance, we were more than happy to pitch in with a few -lines of ink. The dance will be held Saturday night, Aug. 4, at the V.F.W. hall. This one chance for all of us to help a great effort in which a few have carried the load. Please attend the dance, it is a painless way of helping while you are having a lot of fun. Wonder who chose the Cub- Phillies game for that telecast to Europe? Couldn't have been Herb and Junior, could it? We want to see the White Sox play the Giants in the World Series. Now, if someone can discourage the Yankees and Dodgers everything will be hunky-dory. Rural Golfers To Compete In State Sports Festival McHenry county's best rural golfers--members of Farm or Home Bureau eligible to compete in the Illinois Farm Sports Festival--will vie in a county golf tourney Thursday afternoon, August 9, Norm Specht, chairman, said today. Purpose of the tourney is twofold: (1) Provide a recreational progrw.^ for rural people to gather for an afternoon of relaxation and getting acquainted. (2) Decide McHenry county's six entries to the state finals in three classes. The state finals will be held August 22 at the University of Illinois golf course In conjunction with the two-day Sports Festival finals. Golf will begin at 1 p.m., and if enough entries are received, Specht will prepare tee off times. Winners will be determined on a low gross basis. To clear up a misunderstanding about the state tourney, Specht said three low gross trophy winners will be determined in each class. Then, those golfers who do not win a prize will have their scores submitted for a prize based on the Peoria handicap system. McHenry county golfers should make their entry at the McHenry County Farm Bureau (Woodstock phone 338-2000) at once. This will help the committee plan for the affair and it will assure you of a place to golf. Here are the classes: Class 1. Ladies. Class II. Associate ; male members or dependents of these members who are eligible. Class III. Regular male members and male dependents who are eligible. This is the first year for golf in Sports Festival, and it comes after several years of trying to have such a tourney by Roy E. Will, Sports Festival manager and an ardent golfer. Sunday afternoon in a game halted and then called on account of rain. John Corso was our most productive hitter as he drove in three runs on two hits. In the fifth, John's towering triple that landed about ten feet shy of the tennis court scored two runs. We scored five times in the fifth to break up a 1-0 game. Jack Adams started the inning with a line drive single to right, Hiller was hit by a pitch, Himpelman s i n g l e d in A d a m s , Meyer reached first on a fielder's choice that scored John Hiller, Vern Petersen doubled to» score Joel Himpelman, John Corso's triple scored Meyer and Petersen, and Lloyd Smith's line drive single to right field drove John Corso across. However, Westin's sub-par record has held up under the onslaught. Closest rival, following the eleventh League round, is Jim Jensen who tallied a 36. One stroke back are Jerry Hill and John Hodge, both with 37's. Walter Ream's swingers are close-in with 26. 0 Outdoors By Jack Walsh This year's mourning dove season will open at noon Sept. 1, and extend for 70 half-days to sunset November 9. Shooting hours will be from noon to sunset each day. The daily limit is 12 birds and the possession limit after the first day is 24. Wildlffe technicians say the 1962 dove population is high and predict a good season. Every year we hear this question, "Is it necessary to buy a Federal Migratory Waterfowl Stamp to hunt doves"" The answer is no. 1 Shotgun deer permit quotas have been filled for Hamilton, Gallitin, Carroll, Pope, Hardin, Clinton, Ogle, and Jo Davies counties. Applications requesting a permit for any of these counties will be returned unless the sender lists a second choice county that is still open. The 1962 Illinois state fishing championship finals to determine the top ind i v i d u a 1 angler and, for the first time, a Mr. and Mrs. Anglers team will be held at Channel Lake and Lake Catherine here in the Chain O'Lakes next September. The Mr. and Mrs. Anglers finals will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, and the individual fishoff will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30. Conducting the fishing tournament finals and some of the; eliminations for the second straight year will be Barney Shunneson, operator of the Channel Lake boat house which will be tournament headquarters. In addition to the state titles, the individual and Mr. and Mrs. winners will qualify for all-expense trips to the World Series of Sport Fishing, Inc., tournaments to be held in October. The Mr. and Mrs. two-day event will be held Oct. 13-14 at Hot Springs, Ark., while the individual will be held again for the second straight year in a series of Oklahoma waters, Oct. 15-19. Traveling expenses will be provided for both the individual and Mr. and Mrs. Angler qualifiers to the World Series and trophies will be awarded to each of the state winners. There also will be other prizes for those participating in the state finals. Both the individual and Mr. and Mrs. state events are open only to Illinois residents, who possess 1962 valid fishing licenses. Channel lake and Lake Catherine will hold its eliminations for Mr. and Mrs. Anglers from Sept 3 (Labor Day Monday) thru Sept. 15. Two couples will qualify each day for a total of 26. Individuals will qualify from Sept. 17 thru Sept. 29. Two will oualify each day for a McHenry Country Club Hosts' Women's Amateur Golf Meet McHerfry Country club is proud to have been chosen as the site for the first annual Women's Amateur golf tournament. This invitational tourney is sponsored by the newly organized No rthern Illinois Women's Golf association and will be held on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 16 and 17. Entries are limited to 150 contestants and entry blanks must be in the mail by Friday, Aug.^3. Detailed plans, listed on the information sheet, will be posted at the local club for your inspection. This inaugural meet is attracting many fine golfers from. Northern Illinois, but is set up for high and low handicap golfers. Anglers attempting to qualify during the Channel Lake and Lake Catherine eliminations will not have to pay an entry. When or how the other invited groups conduct their trials will be left solely up to them. All fees collected by Shunneson from the other resorts, lakes associations and sportsmen's groups conducting eliminations will be used for thp finals prize fund.
