/ Page Twelve THE McHENH* PLAINDEALER Thursday, September 13,1962 UNDER 21 A column for teen-agers By Dan Halligan Casserole Cuts Cooking Comers DEAR DAN: The teen-agers on our street would like some advice. You seb, our parents and the neighbors object to everything we do. We don't like some of the same shows they do on television and the ones we do like are repeats. So, no television. About 6 or 7 o'clock, we're left with nothing to do until bedtime. We can't plrfy any games such as basketball, croquet, baseball or games like that because they fear we'll have our feet in the shrubbery or flower beds. Because we didn't want to go against our parents' wishes, we decided to sit on the front porches and talk but even then the neighbors complain. Just what can we do? -- Unhappy Teens. DEAR UNHAPPY TEENS: The solution has arrived and I do mean school. You kids have what is known as the end-of-the-summer blues and school is starting just in time to brings the smiles back on your faces. You have no problem left, believe me. DEAR DAN: I'm a good Christian girl and have a good Christian boy friend but he's driving me batty with his speeches about religion. He thinks our particular religion is the finest in the vV'orld and I suppose he should think that way but he doesn't show tolerence by knocking and finding fault with fhe other religions. All we do when we sit in his car is talk religion and I'm about ready to break up. Should I tell him how I feel or just drop him for a while and see what happens? -- Good C. G. DEAR GOOD C. G.: A good Christian girl will tell a boy friend how she feels and not simply call it quits. She will also tell her good Christian boy friend it is not christian like to pan another religion. DEAR DAN: The other day my boy friend came by the house to return,a.. book ,1 had let him Dorrow and foolishly, I invited him in. You see, I'm not supposed to have anyone in the hoji§&,, .girls included, when my parents aren't home because they're quite fussy about our furniture and other things. " Well,, X"4jdn't stqp to think. Then while we were talking, the washing-machine started acting up down in the basement and when T] CbUld'nt stop it after I ran down stairs, I called David to hurry down and help me. He had- just finished stopping it when my father happened to walk' in. You can imagine what it looked like -- the two of UiCalone in the house and especially down in the basement. - • * • ^ - Dad bT^t' his top "-- completely. He ordered David out of the house and told him if he ever tried to date me again, he would see that the police were told. He called me a tramp, ahfofig other bad names, and sent me to my room. | I have to go to my room every night after supper and study for one whole month. Dan, all of what happened was perfectly innocent and I want to know what can be done about it. My mother believes j me. I'm sure my father does too but he's said too much and j done too much to back down now. What help can you give? -- M. C. DEAR M/ C.: I think if I were the boy's parents .especially his father, I'd get a little mad too -- only at your father. Your Dad was (and is) right in not wanting boys in the house while you're home atone but he carried his ruling fitir - -VXf-.'S iSZSvim ATTORNEY TALKS TO STUDENTS ON RACIAL PROBLEM Here's good menu news: a glamorous tuna casserole topped with crisp chow mein noodles. Canned tuna, which requires no preparation, joins forces with other convenience foods to^ive ^you a choreless one-dish meal. When the casserole coiries out of the oven, you'll enjoy the happy flavor balance of tuna with the sweetness of peas, the mild tang of pimiento and the pungent mushroom soup which blends the ingredients together. The noodles, of course, provide a pleasant texture contrast. \ And here's good nutrition news: this tuna casserole not only gives you satisfying flavor and saves you work but supplies exceptionally fine nutrition values as well. Tuna goes to the head of the protein class for high protein content and low calories. It has valuable minerals and vitamins, too. And the vegetable oil in which tuna is packed, combined with the natural tuna oil, contributes desirable polyunsaturates to your diet. Tuna Chow Mein Casserole David James, Chicago attorney, will speak to Marian Central's American Assembly class at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13. The subject of his talk will be the racial problem. This is one of the problem areas being studied in this discussion-decision government course as outlined by the American Assembly at Columbia university and followed in the text, "Goals for Americans." His topic will follow the questions: What remains to be done in , government, education, employment and in living conditions to ensure equal opportunities for all Americans regardless of race? How can discrimination be eliminated? Should an order of priority be set up for action as between the various 1 can undiluted cream of mushroom soup 1 can (1 pound) peas 1 can (4 ounces) pimiento, diced 2 tablespoons chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 can (3 ounces) chow mein noodles 2 cans (6V2 or 7 ounces each) tuna in vegetable oil Combine undiluted soup, peas with liquid from can, pimiento, onion and lemon juice in a lM>-quart casserole. Your boy friend's parents should talk to your father and see if they can't convince him fathers can sometimes be as much in the wrong as their sons and daughters. Even I make mistakes!! DEAR DAN: School will soon be starting and I wish you would give me some tips on how I can become popular with my classmates. I was quiet in grade school and I don't want to start high school not having any friends. Please help me. -- Margaret. DEAR MARGARET: Let's say there will be 100 freshmen entering your high school this fall. Out of that round number, about 97 of them will be just as shy and self-conscious as you. The other three will have already conquered these young teen-age drawbacks. So, knowing you're among the majority should automatically make you feel better. -Be, yourself and speak up. Teen-agers of your age are sometimes afraid they'll say the wrong thing at the wrong time and they very seldom do. If you have confidence in yourself, you'll be one of the most popular freshmen in your school this year.
